Sustrans is the charity making it easier for people to walk and cycle. Our vision is a society where the way we travel creates healthier places and happier lives for everyone.  In the last year, we have achieved some amazing things, including delivering 203 miles of walking and cycling in partnership with others, and recording 3.8 million walking and wheeling journeys to school in our 2019 Big Pedal campaign. We are the custodians of National Cycle Network (NCN), used by the public for 780 million trips last year and work with our many partners and stakeholders to develop the NCN across the UK.  We employ 650 staff across the UK and are supported by 3,500 volunteers.

This is an exciting time to join Sustrans. Our strategy is focused on two key priorities: Paths for Everyone and Liveable Cities & Towns for Everyone.  There is new ambition amongst staff, senior managers and Trustees to raise the profile of Sustrans’ fundraising and supporter engagement and we are committed to further investment to achieve this.

In the newly created post of Director, Fundraising & Supporter Engagement, you will report to the Executive Director, External Affairs.  Key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing, motivating and developing a committed team of staff based in our Bristol office
  • Developing our supporter engagement strategy, identifying key areas of opportunity to engage the public in our work
  • Delivering our income generation plans and modernising our approach to fundraising, ensuring we make full use of new methodology, media and technologies
  • Working closely with other externally facing teams to harness the benefits of closer integration
  • Leading efforts to strengthen the charity’s digital engagement capability and capacity

We are looking for a creative, entrepreneurial professional who is excited about the huge potential for impact in this role. You will need a broad background in fundraising and supporter engagement and be able to draw on your experience to target our resources and effort effectively. You should have a visible leadership style, championing supporter engagement and income generation across our organisation.

Our cause has rarely had a higher profile.  Sustainable transport, urban community renewal and individual wellbeing are vital issues for society and Sustrans has a long and successful track record of making a practical, tangible impact in these areas. We now aspire to raise the bar in terms of our supporter engagement and fundraising and you will play a critical role in this.

We envisage the Director, Fundraising & Supporter Engagement being on site in our Bristol office for approximately 2 days per week.

For a recruitment pack with further information please contact James Stephens at Morgan Law by emailing exec@morgan-law.com or telephoning 0207 747 4931. Application is by CV and supporting statement. The closing date for applications will be 11pm on Monday 27 July 2020.

Sustrans is committed to reducing inequality, valuing diversity and enabling inclusion. We welcome applications from people with the appropriate skills from all parts of the community.
