Do you want to make the world a better place with your human rights advocacy expertise? The Open Society Foundations’ International Migration Initiative (IMI) seeks a Team Manager to help develop IMI’s Fair Work Division priorities: Building an Inclusive Workers’ Movement; Enforcing Supply Chain Accountability & Reforming Recruitment Practices; Leveraging Mega-Sporting Events to Advance Decent Work and Data-Driven Strategies to Advance Labor Rights in the Digital Economy. This is a one-year, fixed term maternity cover position based in London from 15th September 2020 through to 15th September 2021.

The International Migration Initiative (IMI) works to stop the exploitation of migrant workers, to build stronger ties between host communities and newcomers, and to improve protections for refugees and vulnerable migrants. We make grants, advocate, create multi-stakeholder partnerships, and engage with actors across a broad range of sectors, including civil society, national and local governments, international organizations, faith groups, and the private sector.

As a Team Manager at Open Society, you will:

  • Contribute to the development of the strategy for the Fair Work Division and directly supervise the work of a program specialist in areas including grant-making, coalition building, and NGO strengthening;
  • Maintain a broad overview of work across IMI’s thematic issue areas and geographic priorities including Asia, the Arab region, and Europe;
  • Build collaborative relationships with partners inside and outside of OSF, including in philanthropy and the private sector, that advance the program’s goals;
  • Oversee analysis of grant proposals + supporting documentation, grant reports (track and ensure compliance with OSF finance guidelines, procedures, and reporting requirements), peer and expert review, authorizing/declining grants within an approved budget; organizational assessment and evaluation;
  • Coordinate conferences, expert consultations, strategic planning and evaluation processes, including consultation with staff, internal and external partners as needed;
  • Establish and maintain linkages with partners within OSF and externally, including government representatives, international organizations, community groups, private sector actors, coalitions and international organizations;
  • Actively participate in the IMI management team and represent IMI as required at meetings of the Open Society Foundations and international, regional, and national conferences; Identify and help manage international consultants to advance grant-making and program objectives.

What we are looking for:

  • 7-10 years of relevant experience and/or training in work advancing social justice strategies;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the labor migration field and of issues concerning worker organizing and decent work, global supply chains, ethical recruitment, and corporate accountability in specific sectors;
  • Understanding of the labor movement, community organizing and other social movements, and knowledge of international labor rights instruments and related enforcement mechanisms would be an advantage;
  • Excellent strategic and analytical skills, including the ability to combine external and internal inputs into a compelling strategy and theory of change, and to synthesize complex bodies of information and articulate operational decisions, to assess progress and adapt as appropriate;
  • In-depth knowledge of and practical experience in developing countries with specific knowledge of the Middle East and/or Asia preferred;
  • Deep experience in the conception, design, and execution of policy and advocacy strategies and initiatives that persuade stakeholders to take action.
