About Lepra

Lepra is an international charity working to beat leprosy founded in the UK 1924.

Leprosy affects hundreds of thousands of people a year, often the most vulnerable, causing life-changing disabilities, but there is a cure. Lepra “discovered” the first cure for leprosy in 1945 and since then has continued to pioneer and innovate better support and treatment for those affected by leprosy.

Due to prejudice and lack of knowledge, there remain up to 3 million people with undiagnosed leprosy and millions of others who have suffered permanent disability because of late diagnosis and treatment.

Lepra works with communities in Bangladesh, India and Mozambique to find, diagnose and rehabilitate people affected by leprosy.

Last year (2018-2019) Lepra:

  • reached 283,000 people through diagnosis, treatment and care.
  • reached a further 1.46 million people through health education and events to raise awareness of leprosy and other neglected diseases.
  • trained 13,514 government health staff and 16,456 new health care workers, volunteers, doctors,
  • provided 37,000 bespoke pairs of specialised footwear for those with serious disabilities
  • provided 5,000 surgical procedures to improve disability
