Job Details

This role is responsible for raising the agency's profile within the media and social media, advising senior managers and expert staff about how we can enhance our reputation, promote our public health mission, and deliver our business priorities.

You need an excellent news sense, be able to spot and create content, and plan effectively, coupled with excellent writing skills so you can turn out stories that show how we deliver our wider public health mission as well as handled media issues. An important part of the role is to identify key issues in a timely manner and respond quickly to breaking or negative stories to limit potentially damaging media and social media coverage.

You will need great networking skills and the ability to forge strong and trusted relationships across the organisation and with external stakeholders.

Description

Key responsibilities:

  • Proactively and creatively develop and implement media and social media plans and opportunities to increase news coverage that demonstrates the agency's wider contribution to the public sector.

  • Produce appropriate written communications, including media handling plans, to effectively communicate our messages in consultation with subject matter experts in the agency.

  • Scope, write, edit and publish news and digital content to style, using a content management system

  • Monitor and anticipate key issues in a timely manner and respond quickly and accurately to breaking or negative stories to limit potentially damaging media coverage or social media activity.

  • Day-to-day management of the agency's website and social media channels, ensuring content meets user needs.

  • Act as an agency spokesperson, appropriately briefing media on issues, and arranging media broadcast interviews as required.

  • Monitor, evaluate and report media and social media coverage

  • Develop and nurture good working practices and relationships with agency staff involved in media issues

  • Develop and nurture good working relationships with journalists and social media bloggers to promote the work and role of the agency.

  • Communicate the principles of good content design to others in the agency

  • Liaise with external stakeholders on topical media issues, developing and maintaining lines of co-operation and demarcation

  • Play a proactive role in the communications division's account management and project management system.

  • Play a proactive role in delivering the agency's communications and reputation strategy.

Profile

  • Good knowledge and experience of working in a busy digital communications and media environment in a large, complex, expert organisation, including , ability to plan and proactively create effective content and react to fast-breaking news stories

  • A good understanding of what drives reputation, with a demonstrable experience of leading and implementing successful media and digital campaigns to deliver business objectives

  • Good planning, project and time management skills, with ability to work on own initiative and in team to problem solve, and prioritise own work according to changing business needs

  • Experience of evaluating digital and traditional media content and social media tools to assess performance and inform business decisions

  • Good written, editorial, social media engagement and oral communications skills with a strong, proven understanding of what makes a good news story and interesting, accessible content

  • Good internal and external relationship management skills, with ability to develop good working relationships with and influence journalists, social media influencers and senior managers, dealing with conflict and challenge in a calm, measured way
