THE ALAN TURING INSTITUTE

There has never been a more significant time to be involved in data science and AI. There is growing recognition of the importance of these technologies to our economic and social future: the so-called fourth industrial revolution. The technical challenge of keeping our data secure and private has grown in its urgency and importance. At the same time, voices from academia, industry, and government are coming together to debate how these technologies should be governed and managed.

The Alan Turing Institute, as the UK’s national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, plays an important role in driving forward advances in these technologies in order to change the world for the better.

The Institute is named in honour of Alan Turing, whose pioneering work in theoretical and applied mathematics, engineering and computing is considered to have laid the foundations for modern-day data science and artificial intelligence. The Institute’s goals are to undertake world-class research, apply its research to real-world problems, drive economic impact and societal good, lead the training of a new generation of scientists, and shape the public conversation around data and algorithms.

After launching in 2015 with government funding from EPSRC and five founding universities, the Institute has grown an extensive network of university partners from across the UK and launched a number of major partnerships with industry, public and third sector. Today it is home to more than 500 researchers, a rapidly growing team of in house research software engineers and data scientists and a business team.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

As we enter the next phase of our exciting journey, The Alan Turing Institute is seeking four additional trustees to join its Board, as non-executive directors. You will share our vision for the UK to become one of the best places in the world to undertake research in data science and AI and for that research to be translated into real-word applications, for the public good. We are committed to building a diverse community and would like our board to reflect this. We therefore welcome applications from the broadest spectrum of backgrounds.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are seeking skills in our new trustees that complement the existing members of the Board and we are particularly interested in applications from individuals that can demonstrate significant experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Cutting edge data science and AI;
  • Domestic or international commercial start-ups;
  • Public policy and/or regulation;
  • Finance, legal or business advisory expertise.

The Institute acts as a convener of Government, academia, industry, public and the third sector so an understanding of and an ability to connect the Institute with any of the following would be highly desirable:

  • Government departments and public sector organisations;
  • Foundations that fund activity aligned with our ambitions;
  • Organisations aligned or connected with the sustainable development goals, climate change and the clean energy, space and satellite industries;

You need to share our values and be prepared to commit the time and energy needed to ensure the success of The Alan Turing Institute as the UK’s national centre for data science and AI.

The Board normally meet 6 times a year. The role is a voluntary one but reasonable expenses to attend Board meetings are reimbursed.

Company

The Alan Turing Institute, headquartered in the British Library, London, was created as the national institute for data science in 2015. In 2017, as a result of a government recommendation, we added artificial intelligence to our remit.

The Institute is named in honour of Alan Turing (23 June 1912 – 7 June 1954), whose pioneering work in theoretical and applied mathematics, engineering and computing are considered to be the key disciplines comprising the fields of data science and artificial intelligence.

Five founding universities – Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, UCL and Warwick – and the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council created The Alan Turing Institute in 2015.

Eight new universities – Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Queen Mary University of London, Birmingham, Exeter, Bristol, and Southampton – joined the Institute in 2018.

Since its inception the Institute has been funded through grants from Research Councils, university partners and from strategic and other partnerships.
