Company
Services for Education (S4E) is charity which delivers a range of services to schools in the West Midlands. The services were previously delivered by Birmingham City Council. S4E is not for profit and began trading in September 2012. It has around 280 employees and an annual turnover of £8m.
S4E comprises four different service components – the music service, the health education service, the learning and assessment service and the learning technology service. Together they aim to provide comprehensive professional development to schools and early years settings and are aligned both to the demands of the national agenda and the local context.
Support can be through either in-school or centre-based sessions. S4E works with whole staff groups, targeted sets of teaching and support staff and governors or parents as well as providing one to one consultancy.
The charity continues to provide high quality services to Birmingham schools as was the case when the services were part of Birmingham City Council. But with its recent independence S4E is seeking to broaden its range of services and provide them to educational settings beyond Birmingham.
Services for Education has a wealth of experienced facilitators including those with extensive senior leadership experience. Services cover a wide range of curriculum areas including English, Maths, Music, Citizenship, RE & British values and Science.
S4E’s learning and assessment service also provides Early Years CPD training and up to date information, drawing on the work of experienced, independent Early Years Foundation Stage consultants and advisers. CPD opportunities ensure that children in their early years are provided with high quality provision enabling them to become confident and independent learners in the future.
One aspect of school life S4E specialises in is creating an ‘emotionally healthy’ school. Opportunities are provided for staff to develop their knowledge and skills in the overall area of emotional health - so they feel able, for example, to handle the impact of bereavement or family breakdown on pupils.
As it expands, S4E is offering an increasing range of leadership services to schools, such as one day and extended courses and bespoke consultancy, aimed at improving pupil outcomes and enhancing school performance. CPD covers aspects relevant to established leaders and those new to post including leading and managing an effective school and strategies for success in leadership.
S4E’s music service has been working in close partnership with schools for more than sixty years. It offers an extensive programme of support delivered by specialist instrumental, vocal and classroom teachers. The service can provide expert tuition on more than 30 instruments in a range of styles.
A new service offered by S4E is dedicated to learning technologies. The service provides a range of technology-based solutions that directly benefit schools. S4E offers a free review of any school’s ICT strategy to ensure that ICT spending aligns with wider strategic aims.
