About the role

The Froebel Trust is a UK charity, based in London, which aims to promote education and learning that is based on the philosophy and principles of the pioneering educationalist, Friedrich Froebel – the inventor of kindergarten. The Trust fulfils its charitable aims through grants, information and support for training, professional development and research as well as organising events and providing resources. Its direct beneficiaries are early childhood education and care (ECEC) practitioners, students and associated professionals; researchers; and families / carers of young children. Indirect beneficiaries are young children from birth to eight years. The Trust works internationally but most of its activity is UK-based.

As the Froebel Trust moves into a new era of public awareness and engagement activity, we are seeking a part-time Communications Officer with the personality, experience, insight and expertise to develop a range of methods and messages, which will raise the profile and extend the influence of Froebelian education in the UK and internationally.

This is a new role, which leaves scope for the successful candidate to shape the remit and responsibilities. However, key tasks will include the identification of short- and long-term, strategic communications goals and the implementation of appropriate plans to meet the associated objectives.

The hours and days of work are negotiable, but flexibility is essential. Principally a desk-based role, with potential for some remote working, it will be necessary to attend events and meetings that will help to drive forward the communications strategy. The Communications Officer will be required to administer and attend quarterly meetings of the Froebel Trust’s Communications and Public Engagement (CPE) Committee and to take part in team meetings. The office is based in Clarence Lodge, in the grounds of Roehampton University’s Froebel College. The nearest station is Barnes. Occasionally, the Communications Officer may need to travel – with prior notice - to represent the Trust at conferences or other events, potentially requiring overnight stays outside London. The Trust covers the cost of travel, accommodation and subsistence in such cases.

The Communications Officer will work with all members of the small Executive Team and with Trustees and volunteers. This role will require a large measure of initiative and autonomy as well as excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.

Knowledge of the early childhood / education sector, including key figures and pertinent policy decisions, is beneficial but is not a requirement of candidates, although it will be important to develop an understanding over time. An interest in Froebelian education or a willingness to learn is essential.
