Join the growing European affiliate of international NGO Environmental Defense Fund to help us win solutions through effective advocacy.

As Project Manager you will join a team charged with protecting public health by reducing exposures to air pollution. Working in a core role on our flagship Breathe London project, you will support the overall project delivery processes including project planning, scheduling, costing, execution, risk management activities and closing processes.

You will deliver the project in close cooperation with our Breathe London lead, and our US Climate & Health team. Based in our London office, you will be responsible for working with diverse stakeholders, including local community groups that host air monitors, NGO partners, city regulators and local air quality experts, to advance and improve clean air solutions in London as part of our work on national clean air legislation.

As a growing team of approx. 20 total employees in Europe, the impact and reach of our work belies our size. We are looking for a crucial new team member with a proven track record in engaging directly with range of external stakeholders to deliver projects on time, and on budget. You will be a highly organized and skilled individual who can facilitate action points on diverse insights, findings and experience to deliver results

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with community groups, local air quality experts, regulators, health professionals, scientists to reduce pollution
  • Represent EDF and collaborate with critical London area stakeholders to meet project objectives
  • Use best available science as a foundation for policy and advocacy strategies
  • Develop and implement strategy for managing key partnerships
  • Make decisions regarding project priorities and deliverables
  • Communicate regularly both orally and in writing with internal and external stakeholders, partners, and consultants
  • Deliver formal and informal oral and professional presentations to small or large groups; ability to translate complex science into layman’s terms is critical
  • Independently troubleshoot problems where precedents are not always available
  • Work with other members of the EDF Health Program and Office of Chief Scientist to conduct and lead timely literature research to facilitate development of pollution mitigation and exposure reduction efforts, policies and strategies
  • Translate project needs into actionable items to forward decision-making
  • Liaise with colleagues across the organization to facilitate information sharing, synergy identification, and collaboration
  • Support EDF representation and technical expert in external settings such as conferences, workshops, and partnerships
  • Support the contribution to communication materials including white papers and op-ed pieces, and contribute to regular blogs to translate research for broader audiences
  • In conjunction with development staff, contribute to funding proposals, grants, and interim reports on a variety of topics, when appropriate
  • In conjunction with management and community group, make independent decisions, solve complex problems, determine approaches to completing projects, and managing processes and teams

Skills and Experience:

  • Educated to Masters level or equivalent professional experience
  • Proven track record of professional experience; environmental science and policy experience desirable
  • Respect for economic and cultural diversity and ability or experience working with diverse groups of people
  • Experience or expertise developing and evaluating local and regional clean air policy, and/or running or participating in local and regional advocacy campaigns
  • Familiarity and understanding of local and regional political structure and influential stakeholders (Knowledge and connections with London officials and stakeholders preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience leading and collaborating with colleagues and partners of varied backgrounds and experience
  • Ability to effectively communicate scientific/economic information in an advocacy setting both to internal and external audiences
  • Ability to manipulate, analyse, and interpret scientific/economic data and use that information to develop innovative solutions to complex problems
  • Highly numerate with extensive experience using computational and presentational software
  • A clear and effective communicator, with strong active listening and excellent writing skills
  • Strong ability to work independently on a multi-disciplinary team, using independent judgment required to plan, prioritise, and organise diversified workload
