Background

Fight for Peace (FFP) is a global youth development NGO that delivers primary, secondary and tertiary level interventions to reduce youth violence. FFP was established in 2000 in the Complexo da Mare favela in Rio de Janeiro as a community-based boxing club targeting young people who were employed by drug trafficking gangs. Today, there are FFP Academies in Rio and London delivering a combat sport-based holistic methodology directly to over 3,000 young people annually.

Fight for Peace began working internationally in 2010 to extend our impact beyond Rio and London. The strategic focus of our international work is to share FFP’s methodology and build partnerships in order to scale responses to youth crime and violence. This has been done to date through a series of projects:

  • The first international project was the Global Alumni Programme (GAP). Working with organisations that are based in communities affected by crime and violence, FFP provides intensive training in the FFP methodology with 12 months of support to adapt it to their contexts. To date over 140 organisations across 26 countries have taken part in GAP, collectively reaching over 240,000 young people.
  • The FFP Alliance was launched in 2016 to establish an on-going community of practice for organisations that have been through GAP. This international network provides a platform from which youth violence prevention activities are strengthened and scaled. Members are supported through collaborative learning and fundraising opportunities. New approaches to reducing youth violence that are tested at FFP Academies in Rio and London, are codified into principle-based content and scaled globally through Alliance members.
  • The Safer Communities Programme (SCP) was launched in 2015 to establish a place-based, multi-agency and multi-sector approach to delivering the FFP methodology. The SCP uses collective impact to integrate multiple services in urban violence hotspots to ensure young people can access the holistic support they need, in contexts where capacity and resources are scarce. The SCP is being piloted in Kingston and Cape Town and is a £2.2 million project funded by the IKEA Foundation and FFP.
  • Life Champions was launched in 2017 to equip a global movement of combat sports coaches to use their sports as a tool for youth development - to create champions in life and champions in the ring.

The FFP Alliance in the UK has recently been bolstered by a £2.3 million grant from the National Lottery Community Fund (NLCF) to strengthen, grow and scale the Alliance in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The project will:

  • Grow the FFP Alliance in the UK by selecting new organisations to benefit from a 12-month package of training and consultancy support based on the FFP methodology;
  • Strengthen the existing community of Alliance Members to more effectively and sustainably work with young people most at risk of exclusion and involvement in crime and violence;
  • Scale FFP’s accelerated alternative provision education programme Pathways, through the training and resourcing of selected FFP Alliance Members.
