The Organisation

The Open University Students Association is a company limited by guarantee (number 12031028) and a registered charity (number 1183837 and SC049546). We are a Students Union, serving the interests of around 170,000 part-time and distance-learning students spread across the UK, continental Europe and beyond. Our role is to represent and support the interests of this vast and diverse community.  Our mission is to make a positive difference for all Open University students. Our student body is unlike any other, with no previous qualifications required to study most courses, more than 24,000 disabled students, 3 in 4 students currently in work, students in 90% of UK postal districts and more than 1,700 studying in prison and other secure environments. We provide a range of services to our students, including providing opportunities to meet and participate in a wider student community; high quality communications; support services including peer support and Nightline; a diverse array of high-quality volunteering opportunities to suit a range of students; and the opportunity to bring the student voice to inform decision making both within the University and in the wider public policy arena.

The Roles

We have vacancies for 2 External Trustees to join our Board, on an initial term to 31 July 2021 with potential extension thereafter. The roles are as follows:

External Trustee (Financial Skills)

We’re looking to recruit an External Trustee with skills and experience in financial management, whether in a charity, public or private sector context. Preferably candidates will hold a CCAB qualification or otherwise have equivalent professional experience. A fuller role description and person specification can be found in the attached information pack.

External Trustee (with an interest in being considered for Chair of the Board)

We’re looking for candidates with an interest in being considered for the role of Chair of the Board, with significant management and leadership experience and experience of committee work and chairing meetings. Previous experience as a Trustee and/or Company Director will be an advantage.

Both roles provide an excellent opportunity to bring your skills, experience and insight to help our development as a charity in the pursuit of our strategic goals. We have recently agreed a new strategy to 2022/23 which is due to launch at the end of October 2019. Further details are included in the information pack.

To Apply

Please read the attached information pack, which includes role descriptions and person specifications for both roles. Candidates can choose to apply for both, or either one. Applications are by CV and covering letter (no more than 2 sides) addressing the person specification. Applicants must also be able to meet the eligibility criteria included in the information pack. The deadline for applications is Thursday 14 November at 12pm (noon). Applications should be sent by email to oustudents-jobs@open.ac.uk.

Why Apply?

This is a fantastic opportunity to bring your skills and experience to help the growth, decision making and effective governance of a growing charity working at the forefront of supporting part-time and distance-learning students. Working as part of an engaged Board of Trustees, the successful candidate will have real scope to get involved in helping to shape our work and our development in delivering our exciting new strategy. Our Board meetings are not just about effective governance, they also provide opportunities to get involved in detailed and interesting conversations on solving problems and inputting new ideas and initiatives to take us forward. In return for your time, commitment and input across our range of activities you will gain access to ongoing training and support and networking opportunities as well as the chance to develop your skills and experience in our context.

The OU Students Association holds equality and inclusivity as one of our core values and seeks to have a diverse Board capable of representing the community that we serve. We therefore welcome applications from all sections of the community.
