Ely Cathedral is an innovative and vibrant Cathedral attracting some 250,000 worshippers and visitors a year.

We are looking to appoint an experienced fundraiser, but we are open to considering candidates for whom this could be their first Head of Department role.  This could be a full-time or a part-time role and presents an exciting opportunity to be involved in key projects and activities at Ely Cathedral.

Working closely with the Dean, and reporting to the Administrator, the successful applicant will have a proven record of fundraising in the not-for-profit sector.

Objectives:

  • To maximise the Cathedral’s income from trusts, grant-making bodies and donated sources, including major- and medium-scale individual donors, legacies, the corporate sector, etc.
  • To raise annual revenue in support of the Cathedral’s Mission and, in particular, its activities in the fields of education, music and conservation.
  • To raise funds for identified capital and/or endowment projects, having regard to Chapter’s policy of securing the required funding before commencing capital projects.
  • To nurture and manage existing donors, to develop new individual and corporate relationships and secure further donations where appropriate.
  • To develop excellent relations with the Council and Administrator of the Friends of Ely Cathedral, with a view to optimising common activities and encouraging The Friends’ support of Chapter’s investment needs.

Primary responsibilities:

  • To advise the Dean, Chapter, Trustees (including the Council of the Order of St Etheldreda) and Administrator on a strategy to maximise donated income from a variety of sources and to be responsible for the implementation of that strategy.
  • Having regard to Chapter’s longer-term development plans, to propose to the Dean, Chapter, Trustees and Administrator, and gain agreement to realistic annual financial targets.
  • To liaise with the Chairman and Trustees of the Cathedral’s charitable vehicle, the Ely Cathedral Trust (including the Order of St Etheldreda); and to secure their active support.
  • To guide and assist members of Chapter and Trustees in building the Cathedral’s relationships with regular donors, so as to encourage repeat donations.
  • To take responsibility for completing applications for such grants that may be available.
  • To advise the Dean, Chapter, Trustees and the Administrator on charity law as it affects the Cathedral and on tax-effective charitable giving mechanisms.
  • To liaise with members of Chapter and the Cathedral’s Management Team on specific projects within their respective areas of responsibility or interest, in order to identify and design project packages for presentation to potential donors and supporters.
  • To respond to the interests and objectives of potential donors and supporters by proposing packages from the portfolio of the Cathedral’s priority projects that match both parties’ objectives.
  • To help to select and manage specialist consultants who may, from time to time, be engaged by the Cathedral for specific fundraising or project development tasks.
  • To keep abreast of continuing developments and good practice in the field of professional fundraising, for example through publications, conferences and networking opportunities.
  • To line-manage the Development Officer and to develop that person’s knowledge and skills.
  • To work alongside colleagues in the Cathedral’s administrative team and to provide support to them (and vice versa) in a harmonious and co-operative working environment.

Personal Attributes:

  • Be credible, confident and articulate, with excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Experience of a wide range of fundraising activities with proven success of income generation.
  • Experience in preparing funding applications and writing detailed proposals.
  • Able to manage and analyse data and financial information.
  • Able to work in harmony with their co-workers.
  • Highly professional, with a proactive approach to their work.
  • In sympathy with the aims and objectives of the Church of England
