Development Director
Hertford College Oxford
Highly Competitive Salary

Hertford College Oxford seeks to appoint an outstanding individual to the role of Development Director, a key position within the College. The postholder will be responsible for developing and implementing a fundraising strategy that ensures Hertford continues to lead, innovate and to develop and foster alumni relations.

Hertford is a unique college, committed to academic excellence and social mobility. Its buildings are beautiful, and the Hertford Bridge is one of the most photographed icons in all of Oxford. As well as being amongst the top ranked Oxford colleges, it is also one of the friendliest with a long tradition of, and commitment to, inclusiveness and access.

Hertford has built an increasingly successful Development Office which has gained strong momentum over the past 6 years under the leadership of its outgoing Development Director. Building on recent successes, the new postholder will lead new and innovative approaches to its philanthropic fundraising. Over the next few years, a major focus will be on the College’s estates strategy which has just launched with an ambition to spend up to £75m, for which significant philanthropic contribution will be needed.

Reporting to and working closely with the College’s Principal and Governing Body, the successful candidate will play an important part in the strategic direction of the College and in College life. Leading a committed development team, the postholder will maximise fundraising income from both new and established sources, promoting the College’s interest and aspirations among alumni and other potential benefactors. Along with the Principal, the postholder will also co-chair a Development Board made up of ten influential alumni which meets at least twice yearly, and continue the development of alumni relations supported by the production of the high quality publications which underpin the development efforts.
The successful candidate will be a creative thinker with a strong sense of integrity and a values-driven approach to philanthropic fundraising. S/he will have a proven record in securing philanthropic gifts from high net worth individuals together with experience of developing inspiring campaign messaging, personal warmth and expertise in relationship management, outstanding interpersonal and communications skills and a passion for the mission of Hertford College.

This is a unique chance to join one of the leading Oxford colleges and make a real difference in a vibrant institution.

The College recognises the importance of this position and a Fellowship will be awarded to the successful candidate.
