The Trustees of the Peninsula Medical Foundation are seeking to appoint their first full-time fundraising post. This is a major step for which the charity has been preparing during the past two years. It is an opportunity for the right person to be part of a great, philanthropic enterprise set in a lovely part of Devon and Cornwall. You will work closely with local & national leaders, medical scientists, clinicians and philanthropists to develop a small but well-established charity into a major financial supporter for local Medical Research and Training.

About the PMF

The charity operates across Devon and Cornwall and was established in 1997. It seeks philanthropic funding to support the work of the medical and dental schools based in Plymouth. Its Trustees and Patrons are drawn from a range of national and local leaders with connections to business, medical and university sectors across Devon and Cornwall. To date the charity has provided modest funding to support a range of projects such as student bursaries, PhD salaries, equipment needs, etc. The Medical School was founded in 2007 and is associated with one of the largest hospitals in the UK and major cancer treatment centre. As these institutions have developed, so too has the need for philanthropic funding to support them and their important contributions to health. The charity, which is independent, has made an increasing contribution and is now ready to appoint its first full time fund raising manager.

Plymouth accommodates one of only four centres of excellence supported by Brain Tumour Research (UK). The PMF is launching a major appeal for funds to support its teams of scientists and clinicians working in this area.

About the Role 

The purpose of the role is to lead the fundraising work of the charity. A high degree of self-motivation and initiative will be required. The re-structuring of the charity has been completed and a fundraising strategy is in place. The post holder will have the support of a fund raising committee and its chair. There are well-established links to the University and its Faculty of Health. University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is one of the largest hospitals in the UK and is an important partner.

Outline Terms and Conditions

Outline Terms and Conditions: Close liaison with the University and the Medical School is essential. You will be provided with visiting guest office facilities in the University Development Office on an ad hoc basis by arrangement. There may be accommodation available on a similar basis in the Medical School building adjacent to Derriford hospital. For the majority of the time it is expected that you will work from home. An allowance for office facilities and travel etc. will be arranged as will the necessary equipment such as telephone and laptop computer. Employer contributions to a pension will be available. The post includes 20 days’ leave plus bank holidays plus 2 further days during the University Christmas closure period.

2-year fixed term (in the first instance). Six month’s probationary
period.
