Description
Key responsibilities
- Provide sound and credible media handling advice to senior colleagues. Brief spokespeople effectively in advance of interviews and provide feedback on their performance.
- Step up to take charge in the absence of the Head of News in running a professional press office operation, including dealing with any emerging crisis or reputational issue with calm authority.
- Develop innovative and engaging communications campaigns and media handling strategies that promote the organisation's work effectively, maximising digital tools and using audience insight to get the best possible results.
- Co-ordinate and oversee the organisation's programme of regional media engagement, working closely with the 8 Regional Directors and their teams to help shape the regional debate on education and care standards.
- Handle calls from journalists with confidence, use judgement to draft and clear responses to enquiries, and guide colleagues doing the same.
- Write clear and concise press notices, briefing scripts, news articles and other comms materials.
- Monitor and flag relevant coverage in broadcast, print and digital (including social) media during office hours and advise senior colleagues on appropriate handling strategies.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with journalists, other government departments and stakeholders.
Profile
Experience of working as a press officer in a complex high profile organisation, producing engaging media materials, dealing with journalists and overseeing the work of other colleagues.
Experience of using the full range of media channels to influence audiences, including regional, specialist, digital and non-news media.
An understanding of the workings of parliament, government and government agencies, including how the media impacts on the political landscape.
Experience of forging beneficial contacts with counterparts in stakeholder organisations, other Government departments and with journalists.
A broad understanding of other communication tools and disciplines and an ability to transfer skills to other areas.
