The Charity

Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research is an independent charity (Reg Charity No 1116574) based at the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC), Stoke Mandeville Hospital. The charity is dedicated to improving the day to day quality of life for people living with spinal cord injury.

Since our first Research Director was appointed in 2012, we have achieved some important milestones:  The publication of the Spinal Cord Injury Priorities Settings Partnerships, the installation of a state of the art Applied NeuroLab at the NSIC, and the implementation of an NIHR funded drugs trial designed to reduce the occurrence of urinary tract infections.  

We are at an exciting crossroads where the charity has become a proactive grant-making organisation, ensuring we are funding the best possible research throughout the UK and beyond. We prioritise research that will have a tangible impact on the lives of people with SCI,
specifically in the following areas:

1) The prevention of urinary tract infections
2) The prevention and/or treatment of pressure ulcers
3) A better understanding and treatment of pain
4) The use of assistive technology to improve upper limb function.

The Role

We have a successful track record in Trust fundraising with a substantial portfolio of donors who are warm to the charity and its aims. The role will involve utilising current trust research to submit high quality applications, as well as identifying new funding opportunities. Additionally you will ensure that funders are kept updated with the progress of the projects their donations have supported.

Person Specification

You will have excellent written communication skills, be persuasive, with the ability to build and maintain relationships. You will be resilient, tenacious and passionate about our cause and the charity sector.

We are a small team who are governed by an engaged and proactive Board of Trustees. The default contract will be on a permanent freelance (self-employed) basis with an agreed hourly rate.  This allows a more flexible way of working. However we appreciate that some candidates may prefer to be an employee of the charity, and we are happy to consider this option also.

Responsibilities

  • Researching prospective supporters in line with the charity’s aims
  • Utilising existing research and support to establish the appropriateness of further applications
  • Managing a time table of funders to ensure deadlines are appropriately met
  • Working with the Research Grants Manager to develop up to date and accurate cases for support
  • Preparation and submission of well-written, compelling and complete funding applications
  • Maintenance of accurate tracking of acquired funding, pending applications and prospective income
  • Maintaining accurate records on Donorfy, our database.

  • A proven track record of success in trust fundraising
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good I.T skills
