Housing Advisor

The Centre was founded in 1986; we offer a diverse range of services for homeless young people, families in need and the local community on one site. The Centre enables people to gain the skills and support they need to overcome poverty and homelessness. We have a person-focused approach which encourages us to recognise that each human being is different with complex needs and so our response needs to be multi-layered.

Position: Housing Advisor
Location: Westminster, London
Job type: Part Time, 18 months Fixed Term Contract
Hours: 21 hours per week in a 24 hour week
Salary: £33,259.39 per annum (£19,955.63 pro rata for 3 days a week)
Benefits: Pro rata of full time 24 days, rising to 26 after one year’s service, and 28 after two years’ service; Pension Scheme; A Season Ticket Loan is available.

About the role:

The Housing Advisor will provide a structure advice and information service to clients of the Centre in housing options, housing law and aspects of welfare benefits that relate to preventing homelessness and/or ensuring effective housing options.

Responsibilities:

You will be responsible for an allocated number of specialist housing advice appointments and drop-in outreach sessions, providing housing advice to clients in crisis. You will work together with the other members of the Advice Team, referring to our Welfare Rights Specialists when necessary, and build and maintain good relationships with local authorities, housing associations and other housing providers to help meet the aspirations of clients.

About you:

You will have experience and knowledge of housing law and current housing options open to homeless people as well as experience of direct work with vulnerable people providing housing advice, acting as an advocate for clients and a good understanding of welfare rights provision. In addition, you will have experience of case management systems and processes. You have strong skills in networking and the ability to build effective working relationships, and have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
