Job title: International Director

Responsible to: CEO 

JOB PURPOSE

These are exciting and challenging times for The Sparkle Foundation as we are looking to maintain what we currently have in place, measure our impact, build staff capacity, and look at the long-term sustainability of the organisation so we can expand our programmes into other communities in need. The International Director will lead our Malawi operations and coach our team through this data collection, expansion and transformation process. Key responsibilities include: strategic and operational planning and implementation, staff management, financial accountability and developing and maintaining strong relations with funders, policy-makers and stakeholders at local and national level. You will also be required to oversee the Local Director and their team to ensure the objectives of The Sparkle Foundation are delivered with direction of the CEO and the Trustees. The end goal of this role is to lead the organisation to a place where it can be run without an international presence in Malawi and the running costs can be reduced / income can be generated locally.

DIMENSIONS

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of an advocacy and stakeholder engagement strategy to gain buy-in from community members, NGOs, local government officials and establish case for support with policy-makers, funders and officials at local, regional, national and international level.
  • Leadership and team development
  • Coach and train staff and stakeholders ensuring strong staff development and performance of all staff
  • Manage project staff and where necessary interview, recruit and train staff and/or contractors
  • Ensure that the project is implemented to the highest standards, coaching the team to actively manage risks, engage stakeholders, respond to challenges and make adjustments as necessary to ensure the successful completion of the project
  • Identify ways to improve the programme, curriculum, approaches, systems and practices
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of an advocacy and stakeholder engagement strategy to gain buy-in from local government officials and establish case for support with policy-makers, funders and officials at local, regional and national level
  • Implement accountability
  • Lead and support the team to create detailed plans to identify and sequence the activities needed to successfully deliver the programme’s outputs and outcomes using a training of trainers approach, responding to performance data captured in monitoring activities and proactively mitigating against risks
  • Ensure that the project is implemented to the highest standards, coaching the team to actively manage risks, engage stakeholders, respond to challenges and make adjustments as necessary to ensure the successful completion of the project
  • Identify ways to improve the programme, curriculum, approaches, systems and practices
  • Be accountable for financial management of the unit, ensuring strong accountability and value for money is achieved
  • Work with our CEO / Trustees to evaluate performance and use learnings to refine and improve the project.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Governance & Strategy 

  • To ensure as far as is possible that the CEO and the Sparkle Malawi project and the local team have sufficient resources, guidance and professional advice on matters concerning compliance with its governing instrument, the law and the need to remain solvent.
  • To work under the CEO to assist in leading, developing and implement the organisational strategy of Sparkle to sustainably grow the organisation’s ability to help more orphans and vulnerable children, and regularly measure the performance of the Charity against key impact objectives across access to Education and Healthcare.
  • To make proposals to the CEO on the goals, aims and objectives, (short, medium and long term) of Sparkle to further their charitable mission.
  • To liaise with the CEO on a weekly basis, including the provision of written monthly reports. To also write a quarterly in depth report for the Trustees.
  • To help lead Sparkle in a time of change, as it meets the challenges of legal, social and administrative developments and changes.
  • To integrate the plans and strategies of Sparkle to ensure continuity and keeping abreast of developments and benchmarking in the local community.
  • To ensure that at all times The Sparkle Foundation staff, clients and its Board of Trustees comply with all laws related to its activities and operations.
  • To assist in writing and introducing policies and procedures to create and maintain a consistent work culture, relating to staff, clients and all members of Sparkle.

Finance & HR

  • To consult with the CEO, Local Director and Accounts Officer to generate an Annual Budget, and to lead the Sparkle team to ensure income and expenditure is maintained in line with the budget.
  • To oversee the Accounts Officer and ensure the timely and complete preparation of the weekly financial reconciliations and annual audited accounts and Annual Report.
  • To monitor HR strategy, appraisal systems and training programmes.
  • To provide leadership, supervision and direction to staff within the framework of Employment Law or frameworks agreed.
  • To facilitate the establishment and development of training and education at all levels for all staff, in the light of growth of Sparkle.
  • To promote diversity and equality of opportunity in all the work and practices of Sparkle. • To lead and manage all international volunteers in their roles, and ensure local volunteers effectively support the local team.
  • To build a staff culture where everyone is valued and equipped to do their job or fulfil their role.

Programmes & Reporting

  • To lead the development of the charity’s impact strategy and look to implement best practices in international development.
  • To support the local team & partners to develop high-impact projects and monitor their performance against key impact indicators.
  • To work closely with the Local Director to measure the impact of Sparkle by creating project plans, aims, activities and outcomes. 
  • To build Sparkle reputation in the international development sector and create mutually beneficial partnerships with other government bodies, local NGOs, INGOs that further the Charity’s charitable objectives.
  • To oversee and assist with the monitoring and evaluation of all projects and implement learnings across Sparkle based on findings.

Fundraising & Communications

  • To work with the Local Director to create, develop and implement a fundraising strategy that accelerates the financial growth / sustainability of the charity across a diversified range of income streams to achieve long term, sustainable income growth worldwide and in particular locally.
  • To provide donors with accurate, informative and emotive impact reports.
  • To promote the corporate image of Sparkle through interpersonal relations with referrers and businesses, and the establishment of a corporate identity.
  • To represent Sparkle at any required events and opportunities, through carefully devised PR and media strategies
  • To assist the CEO where required with all Sparkle external communications.

Child Safeguarding

  • To read and personally comply with all aspects of the Child Safeguarding Policy and to attend group or individual trainings, inductions on the same.
  • To report promptly any child safeguarding issue in line with the Child Safeguarding Policy. General Responsibilities
  • To respond to team and partner queries with timely and accurate information.
  • To contribute effectively to team meetings, discussions and decision making; and attend training as required.
  • To monitor possible reputational risks to the organisation and alert CEO and management team where necessary.
  • To represent all aspects of the Charity’s work appropriately and professionally, to external and internal contacts.
  • At all times act in the best interests of the Charity.
  • To work within all policies, procedures and budgets set by the Charity.
  • To be involved in board meetings if required
  • To ensure all the outstanding legal issues are resolved

EQUIPMENT AND MACHINERY

  • Use of a range of office equipment on a continual basis, including: Regular use of PC, laptop and training equipment. General office equipment, e.g. photocopier and audiovisual equipment e.g. video/teleconferencing equipment. 6. SYSTEMS The following are examples of systems which will be used when undertaking the role. Regular use of the internet, Outlook email system and Microsoft Office software. Responsible for maintaining own filing system both electronically and in hard copy to comply with legislation, e.g. Freedom of Information and Data Protection requirements. Note: New systems may be introduced as the organisation and technology develops, however training will be provided.
