About the role:

Would you like to apply your passion and expertise in research management to help ensure our charity maximises its contribution to changing children’s lives?

We have an exciting new Head of Grant Funding and Impact role here at the organisation to recruit to, and this post will play a pivotal role in the strategic development of a large, diverse and varied portfolio of grants.

The Charity currently spends on average £70m each year on charitable grants and the portfolio includes an ambitious rolling 5-year research strategy that will see £50m of direct research funding deployed over a 5-year period i.e. an approximate annual research commitment of £10m per year, which includes a £2m national funding call with our partner charity. It also includes other hospital priority areas such as: rebuilding and refurbishment; education; patient & family experience; staff support; and technology & data (including new medical equipment and health technologies and data science).

This role will be responsible for implementing the agreed funding priorities, including helping to shape the strategy and developing processes for pre-award assessment as well as post-award monitoring to maximise the impact of the supported grants. Leading the funding and impact aspect of a wider Grants team, the post holder will develop an extensive and varied network, as their work will see them operating across the charity, the hospital, as well as engaging with external partners.

About the team:

The Grants Team has three main responsibilities:

- Working with the hospital to determine strategic priorities and ensure there are robust funding mechanisms to maximise impact.
- Providing support to fundraisers with compelling information on each funding area.
- Monitoring and evaluating the impact of the work funded by the charity.

There are two sub-teams in Grants at the charity totalling eight people – communications is one aspect, and funding and impact is the other, with the latter being the responsibility of this new post.

About you:

We are looking for a talented individual who wants to utilise their expertise in research management to shape the charity’s increasing investment in research but also broaden their horizons beyond traditional research management.

Specifically, you will need to have:

- An advanced research degree (PhD) in a relevant scientific discipline or equivalent work experience.
- Extensive research / grants management experience (at least 5 years).

The ideal candidate will have proven leadership qualities and thrive in a flexible and sometimes ambiguous, complex and demanding environment. The breadth of relationships involved in the post requires proven ability to proactively engage, manage and influence a complex set of stakeholders, using negotiation and conflict management skills where required.

How to Apply:

Please click on the apply button in the top right-hand corner where you will be taken to a short application form to complete. You are encouraged to include a cover letter with your application, and should refer to the ‘Application and Interview FAQs’ on the career section of our website before you apply.

Applications will be reviewed on an on-going basis and we reserve the right to close the role prior to the closing date, should a suitable applicant be found. Therefore, you are encouraged to apply right away, to avoid disappointment.

About the Charity:

Every day brings new challenges at the organisation. Every day, over 600 seriously ill children from across the UK arrive for life-changing treatments. Every day, young lives hang in the balance as patients, families and staff battle the most complex illnesses. And every day, the brightest minds come together to achieve pioneering medical breakthroughs that change the lives of thousands of children – and change the world. This extraordinary hospital has always depended on charitable support to give seriously ill children the best chance to fulfil their potential. Without donations, the Charity can’t help fund ground-breaking research, advanced equipment, child and family support services, and the rebuilding and refurbishment of wards and medical facilities. Our staff help to raise these vital funds for the hospital. A better future for seriously ill children starts with you.

Recently awarded with a ‘Best Companies 2-star accreditation' and placed number 17 on the 2019 Sunday Times Best 100 Not-for-Profit Companies list - we offer a range of attractive benefits including; a flexible approach to working, 30 days holiday, life assurance, enhanced employer pension contributions, and a discounted season ticket loan.

Due to the large number of applications we receive, we are unfortunately only able to inform shortlisted candidates of the outcome of their application. If you do not hear from us within two weeks of the closing date, please assume that you have been unsuccessful on this occasion. If your application is not successful, we hope that you will not be discouraged and will still apply for other suitable vacancies in the future.

You may have experience of the following: Grants Manager, Research Funding, Fundraising Manager, Research Funding Manager, Grants Management, Fundraising, Head of Fundraising, Head of Grants, Funding Manager, etc.
