Company

WPF Therapy is a charitable foundation which provides high quality, affordable psychodynamic counselling, psychotherapy and group therapy. WPF Therapy is also a training provider offering a variety of counselling and psychotherapy qualifications and courses. Based in central London, the charity has over 90 employees, 30 volunteers and an annual income of around £1.8m.

WPF Therapy began life in 1969 as the Westminster Pastoral Foundation. Founded by a Methodist minister, the charity was originally based at Westminster Central Hall. Despite its religious beginnings, the charity now independent of all religion and works with people of all faiths and none. It is aware that people on low incomes are more likely to suffer from psychological problems and aims to make therapy affordable, through for example, a subsided clinic and therapy fees based on household income.

WPF Therapy’s mission is to “help people with emotional, psychological, spiritual and relationship problems’. It has been providing both one to one and group therapy with the aim of improving quality of life for over four decades. The therapy is intended to aid understanding of relationship issues, build resilience, understand how the past affects present thinking and assist in managing depression, anxiety, stress, loss and traumatic experiences. All sessions take place in the charity’s purpose built HQ in London Bridge, which it has occupied since 2008.

According to the charity’s research, nearly half of the people who come in for an initial consultation cite relationship problems as their prime reason for seeking help. 55% of clients have moderate to severe depression and 53% moderate to severe anxiety. Almost a quarter of clients experience both.

Research also indicates that rates of recovery for the charity’s clients are higher than those reported by many other services. Evaluation of WPF Therapy’s CBT services has revealed that, among clients with significant psychological difficulties, 70% recover from their depression.

WBF Therapy is also a significant psychotherapy and counselling training provider, training over 1,000 people a year. Training takes two forms. There are introductory courses, teaching counselling skills for people in the ‘helping professions’ and the creative, business, legal and management fields. And WPF Therapy also provides professional psychotherapy training, which supplies trainees with practical experience of client work through the charity’s own psychotherapy sessions. Courses are validated by the University of Roehampton.

For vacancies within the organisation, WPF Therapy does not generally use application forms, instead asking applicants to submit a covering letter explaining why they are interested in the position and how they meet the person specification.

WPF Therapy is an organisational member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and the UK Council for Psychotherapy.
