Since our Founding in 1841, York St John University has been driven by the desire to enable students and staff to achieve their personal potential.  An inclusive, progressive culture and a commitment to academic excellence have shaped our history and now as an ambitious, modern university located at the heart of historic York, we are looking to our future.

There has never been a more exciting time to join us.

A new seven year University Strategy emphasises our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region. Significant investment in what we offer – including state of the art sports and science facilities, a new flagship Creative Centre due opening in 2021 and a sister-campus located in central London – signal our engagement with 21st century opportunities. Exciting new partnerships locally, nationally and internationally are creating the conditions to educate people in new and innovative ways, giving more learners the chance to benefit from Higher Education and our staff the means to extend their impact.

We are putting inspirational learning and outstanding research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset and investing in enabling this expertise to thrive.

As a Stonewall Global Diversity Champion and holder of the Social Enterprise Gold Mark for Responsible Business Practice, our strength lies in the supportive, inclusive network that exists within our teams. We are renowned for our friendly environment – our students are known by name and our staff foster multi-disciplinary collaborations – and we will nurture your development so you can accomplish your professional goals and achieve a positive work/life balance.

York is a special place to live and work, with outstanding transport links to the major cities of the north and south.  Named by the Sunday Times in 2018 as the best U.K. city to grow up in because of the quality of education, culture and community spirit that we form part of, York celebrates its rich history whilst creating a thriving home for your future.

The role

With over 180 years of history educating people at the heart of historic York, York St John University is a prominent university with a large and diverse body of former students (our alumni) and a growing network of partners and supporters. Proactively managing these relationships is key to the next phase of our development, which is why our ambitious new long-term strategy emphasises enhanced alumni connections and a new focus on fundraising.

The role of Fundraising / Philanthropy Officer will help facilitate the university’s new direction, taking a lead on working with potential major donors and corporate partners whilst supporting the setting up of a robust individual giving and stewarding process.

Required Skills and Experience

We’re looking for a proactive, confident fundraiser with great communication skills and experience of working with a variety of individual and corporate sources and the confidence to solicit gifts. The successful candidate will understand the importance of developing productive long-term relationships and have the experience to successfully research and developing prospects whilst meeting financial targets. With a wide and varied workload, you’ll be able to juggle a multitude of tasks and know how to effectively prioritise.

The Fundraising and Alumni team is a small but dedicated team. The successful candidate will have plenty of support, but will also be encouraged to develop their own ideas and to manage their own projects.

If you want to work somewhere big enough to make a difference and small enough to make it happen then we'd love to hear from you.

In addition to a competitive salary and the opportunity to work at our beautiful campus in the heart of York, YSJ employees enjoy access to a superb range of benefits including –

  • Generous annual leave entitlement (plus additional leave days during our Christmas closure period)
  • Pension scheme
  • Health cash plan
  • Training and development
  • Discounts at a wide range of high street brands and local companies, including shops, cinemas and gyms.

We welcome all applicants and particularly people from minority ethnic backgrounds as they are underrepresented within the university.

As part of our commitment to providing an inclusive working environment, consideration is given to all request for job share or flexible working arrangements.

Please note that CVs are not accepted in place of the application form.
