PO3: Starting salary £37,650 pa rising in annual increments to £40,653 pa incl LW.

This is a fixed-term post until 31st March 2020, with the possibility of extension (subject to external funding).

Extremism is one of the greatest challenges the country faces, and Local Authorities have a core role to play in building more resilient communities and tackling the harms extremists cause.

In October 2015, the government published a national Counter-Extremism Strategy which highlighted the importance of strengthening local partnerships and standing up for shared values as a way to counter extremist ideologies of all kinds (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/counter-extremism-strategy).

The Community Safety service is seeking an exceptional candidate to lead on the delivery of this work in Lambeth as part of a grant from the Home Office. The successful candidate will play an important role in building resilience across the borough, building a partnership with all those opposed to extremism and challenging extremist ideologies of all kinds through engagement and support, including disruptions.

This will include:

  • Building up an extensive understanding of the extremism-related issues and challenges in Lambeth, and leading on identifying mainstream credible voices in the borough that are working to counter this extremism in all its forms;
  • Supporting these voices in identifying what help they require to consolidate and expand their reach, and building partnerships with community groups, partner organisations and regulatory bodies to develop borough-wide strategies and initiatives supporting the delivery of the Counter Extremism Strategy;
  • Acting as a key Community Safety service advisor on counter extremism and wider community engagement and cohesion issues, and taking a lead role on work aimed at challenging hate crime in the borough.

The successful candidate for this role will have:

  • Good knowledge of Lambeth as a borough, and an understanding of its communities and institutions;
  • experience of community engagement, and the ability to develop strong partnerships with local organisations;
  • A good understanding of what constitutes violent and non-violent extremism, and the range of interventions that can create more cohesive communities, as well as an understanding of the Government’s Counter-Extremism Strategy;
  • Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to articulate a clear and inclusive vision to communities and stakeholders;
  • Strong political awareness and the ability to balance competing priorities to achieve positive outcomes.

Due to the nature of the work, you will be required to work flexibly, including attending events outside of normal working hours and at weekends when necessary.

You will also need to be willing to undertake an enhanced DBS check and obtain Home Office security clearance before commencing the role, in addition to relevant employment checks.

Successful candidates will be offered the post subject to clearance from the Disclosure and Barring Service. Further information can be found at www.disclosure.gov.uk

The closing date for receiving he completed application form is Friday 30th May 2019.
