Head of Data Science
Department: Data and Impact
Citizens Advice offers confidential advice online, over the phone, and in person, for free. Through our national network of charities, we give people the knowledge and the confidence they need to find their way forward – whoever they are, and whatever their problem.
We are looking for an outstanding person to join our senior leadership team to oversee and develop a new suite of powerful data products.
Citizens Advice has a wealth of data and this role will help us put that data to even better use. We are looking for someone who is technically proficient in data science skills but also an exceptional leader of people.
This is a new role and a rare opportunity to define what data science means in one of the country’s most impactful and data-rich charities. You will have the full support of the organisation and will get to work in an environment designed for this end - we have an inventive, open, and entrepreneurial culture, we take an iterative approach to product development that is led by user needs, and we work in a flexible and open office with collaborative tools like G-Suite and Slack.
This role will help us develop our data platforms onto modern cloud-based technology. It will also help us embed data science into product development teams, so an understanding of agile methods and ways of working would be valuable.
Our Data team works closely with our Customer Journey function, which works to give our clients a better seamless and effective experience. The Data team also works closely with our Technology team, which leads our overall technology strategy, and with our operational and policy teams.
This role works closely alongside our Chief Analyst. The Head of Data Science works at the intersection of data and digital, with a focus on the end-users of our data products and the role data plays in user-facing product development. As such, the role works closely with our technology team. The Chief Analyst focuses on interpreting and communicating insights from our data, working with the organisation’s policy teams and helping our performance and projects function track the performance of our strategy and major products and projects.
The Head of Data Science will initially oversee a team of 9, however we envisage this evolving as the team helps us raise our data science capability. The role reports into the Executive Director of Advice & Advocacy.
This role requires a leader who is open, humble, and bold, able to set and drive an ambitious strategy for how data can transform service delivery and bring people with them. It needs someone who starts with user needs and with the problem to be solved, rather than chasing the latest fad. And it needs someone who knows how to get things done in a big organisation. The person in question should be collaborative, willing to take risks, and keen to learn. They should be committed to professional excellence and driven by our social mission.
This is a chance to take on a potentially transformative role in one of the UK’s most impactful and forward-thinking charities. In the last year alone, Citizens Advice helped 2.7 million people through a network of 2,700 locations and there were 43 million visits to our advice website. Sitting on the organisation’s wider leadership team, this role will also work closely with leaders in other domains, helping us solve the many challenges that face any big and dynamic delivery organisation. You will be a vital part of a brilliant and motivated team.
We particularly welcome applications from disabled and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) candidates as BAME and disabled people are currently under-represented throughout Citizens Advice. We are a member of the race equality campaign at Business in the Community, the Prince’s responsible business network and are committed to improving employment opportunities for ethnic minorities across the UK. We also welcome applications from, LGB and Trans and non binary candidates.
We have made a positive commitment to employing disabled people and guarantee to interview all disabled candidates who meet the minimum essential criteria for the role as set out in role profiles.
