ZSL is looking for a Zoo Programme Team Leader to oversee the delivery of Zoo Programme activities at Whipsnade Zoo including our suite of talks on site, event activities and parent/toddler sessions.

Job Overview:

This role will ensure the delivery of Zoo Visitor engagement activities that are in line with BIAZA and EAZA conservation education standards and are fun, informative and aligned to the Zoo Proposition and ZSL 200 Strategy. As part of the People line of the triple bottom line evaluation for the Zoo, support the Zoo Engagement Manager in reporting on the reach and impact of our engagement activities and look to continually improve the on-site offer of the Zoo.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Liaise with the event co-ordinator to support the delivery of Zoo Visitor engagement events on site in line with the Zoo Proposition and Strategy.
  • Develop and oversee the development and delivery of on-site events under the remit of the Engagement team.
  • Support the ZEM in identifying events and activities that engage all audiences visiting the Zoo.
  • Through consistent use of ZSL’s Quality Learning Framework ensure that the Zoo Programme activities on site develop in-line with ZSL 200 and ZSL Proposition. Purchasing goods relevant to the engagement programme such as props, costumes, and any other relevant equipment.
  • Report against KPI’s and impact measures that demonstrate the programme is aligned to the Zoo Proposition and ZSL 200 Strategy objectives. 
  • Being considerate and as inclusive as possible to meet visitor expectations with a wide proportion of our visitor market.
  • Having knowledge of health and safety requirements for engagement events, ensuring safety of the engagement team and visitors at all times.
  • Keeping up to date with the latest developments in informal learning to ensure ZSL Live Interpretation is leading the way by producing an innovative programme of events.
  • Evaluation of existing events to provide records of achievements, KPI’s and audience figure.
  • Inputting, as appropriate, into the monthly report to the Zoo Engagement Manager.
  • Contributing as required to other departments projects including creative input.

Person Specification

Ideally the successful candidate will:

  • Have a BSc degree in biological sciences/science communication or equivalent level of work experience.
  • Have previous experience managing and developing teams.
  • Have a thorough understanding of communicating scientific information to a wide range of audiences.
  • Have demonstrable evidence of having developed innovative live programmes to enable learning with a range of audiences.
  • Have knowledge of the informal education practices in zoos and aquariums – including BIAZA, EAZA networks.
  • Have excellent management skills are essential, both people and project management focused.  
  • Have the ability to work effectively to deadlines and under pressure is paramount.
  • Have strong facilitation and outstanding written and verbal communication ability.
  • Be able to manage competing priorities and delegate effectively.

Please note: This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week), 12 months fixed-term contract position reporting to the WZ Zoo Engagement Manager. The post will be based at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. Having a "can do attitude", solution-focused approach and the ability to make objective decisions under pressure will make you a success in this role.
