Take on the role of Board Chair to help support and protect the profession of structural engineering. We, the Institution of Structural Engineers uphold professional standards and act as an international voice on behalf of structural engineers.

We are the world’s largest membership body dedicated to the art and science of structural engineering.

Our Trustee Board has decided to separate the roles of President and Chair. This is to enable each annual President to maximise their impact during their tenure, whilst this new role of Board Chair steers an effective Board for a period of two or more years.

As Chair, you will provide leadership and direction to our board of Trustees. Working with our CEO and senior staff, you will engage with your trustee colleagues and our senior leadership team to ensure the Board meets today’s expectations of governance of a charity and provides value to meet our strategic aims.

Contract
The intention is to appoint before the end of July 2019 with the successful applicant formally taking up the post as of January 2020. The contract will be an initial length of 2 years and may be extendable for another term, with agreement from the Board, for another 2 years. Therefore, the maximum term of the Chair could be 4 years. This signifies greater continuity for the Institution.

Time
It is anticipated that an average of 2 days per month plus travel time will be required for the role.  Full details of time commitments can be found on our website.

  • Significant experience at senior management and leadership level
  • Demonstrable Board level exposure and service
  • Proven leadership and highly developed communication skills; the ability to support and bring out the best in our Trustee Board and challenge when necessary
  • Knowledge of the duties and obligations of a Trustee Board is highly desirable
  • Experience of working as a Charity Trustee is highly desirable
