WELFARE MANAGER
The Benevolent; The Drinks Industry Charity
The Benevolent is the trade charity that provides help and support to current and former employees of the drinks industry and their families.
Founded in 1886 the charity supports people from all areas of the drinks industry including those involved in the production, distribution, marketing, import, export and sales of alcohol in both the on-trade and off-trade of the UK market. The charity operates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The Benevolent is looking recruit a Welfare Manager to manage and work with our three regional Welfare Officers to the specification outlined below. The Welfare Manager will work closely with the Chief Executive to ensure the best practice, governance and protocol surrounding the welfare of our beneficiaries and well-being of our Officers is maintained to the high standards set and required by The Benevolent.
About you
You will have a proven background in the Social Services and/or Charity sector. You will be articulate with excellent written and verbal communication skills, a strong work ethic working with a small team and show confidence in dealing with a range of people who are experiencing financial, practical or emotional hardship. You will have an innate empathy with the ethos of the charity and a desire to help others.
Report to: Chief Executive
Terms of Employment: Permanent
Purpose: To effectively manage the provision of support and assistance to our applicants and beneficiaries that meet the organisation’s criteria for assistance and in accordance with The Benevolent’s guidelines.
Terms and Conditions of Employment:
Role. This is a full-time, permanent role to start as soon as possible
Salary: £35,000 per annum subject to experience
Pension: 10% of salary contributed by The Benevolent
Life Assurance: Life cover offered at three times annual salary.
Travel: Eligible for interest-free Season Ticket Loan Scheme after probation period.
Annual Leave: 25 days holiday per year, in addition to the statutory public holidays, and this will pro rata over our financial year which runs from January- December.
Hours of Work: 35 hours per week. Office hours are 9.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday and include an hour for lunch. There may be some evening and weekend work for which The Benevolent does not make overtime payments but time off in lieu may be available for out of hours working. This is however at the charity’s discretion.
Location: The place of employment will be the The Benevolent’s offices
Notice Period: 4 weeks
Key Responsibilities
Financial
- To effectively manage the Welfare budget and with the Finance Manager make sure that financial controls are both robust and transparent
- Ensure that financial support provided to beneficiaries meets the Charity’s criteria and that all systems and processes relating to the allocation of funds are correctly adhered to
- Ensure that payments to beneficiaries are made in an efficient and timely manner and that all processes and procedures are adhered to
- Review regular beneficiary grants after a period of one year
Staff Management
- Pro-actively manage and support the team of three Welfare Officers assisting them with visits to be prioritised
- Ensure visit reports are delivered in a timely manner and any requested action is delivered promptly and effectively.
- Provide support, assistance and knowledge to the team as and when appropriate providing learning opportunities as and when required
- To prioritise urgent beneficiary cases irrespective of geographical region
- Pro-actively manage any disciplinary, grievance or absence issues that arise within the team
Administration
- Ensure the administration (CRM) system is kept up to date with visit reports and compliant with Data Protection (GDPR) requirements
- Ensure that all administrative systems comply with the requirements of a registered Charity
- To have weekly contact with our Helpline provider ensuring reporting and data is updated and compliant with our requirements, ie analyse number of callers, applicants, geographical and Trade background
Other
- Be prepared to support administrative tasks relating to the running of the charity including any activities relating to events run by out-sourced event companies
- Be prepared to answer day-to-day phone enquiries, including calls from existing and new beneficiaries.
- Support the Marketing & Communications Manager and Partnership Development Manager with the timely and accurate maintenance of the Harlequin CRM database.
- Support the Finance Manager with budget development.
