Role:  Philanthropy Manager (Midlands)

Department: Fundraising, Major Giving, Regional Major Donors

Grade: 4

Location: Homebased within the Midlands with travel required throughout NSPCC region (including Nottingham, Leicester, Birmingham areas)

Context and Background

As a leading UK charity, the NSPCC has played a crucial role in bringing about huge changes for children, but we know that, in an ever-changing world, there are more challenges to come. Our values encompass putting children first; taking a stand; working together; striving for excellence; and making a positive impact.

The NSPCC has an enviable reputation for Major Giving Individual fundraising and this income stream has the potential to grow substantially. Meaningful stewardship of supporters and maximising the lifetime value from individual major donors is a focus. Securing multi-year pledges and accessing networks of current supporters are key strategic development areas.

The Major Giving Department has an exciting opportunity for a Philanthropy Manager within the Midlands region. You will be developing high-value relationships and stewarding existing donors. Crucially, you will identify and develop relationships with new donors to support the children that we reach out to through our innovative child protection services that help to keep at-risk children safe throughout the UK. This varied post involves a wide range of activities and regular collaboration with a broad range of NSPCC colleagues and external stakeholders. You will also contribute to significant national and regional events, appeals and other fundraising initiatives in line with the purpose of the NSPCC: to fight for every childhood.

Where You Fit In

The NSPCC’s Major Giving Department is formed of three teams: Trust and Statutory, Individual Major Giving and Supporter Management. This role sits within Individual Major Giving and is a regional post, largely working from home and covering the Midlands region, with occasional travel outside of the region. The NSPCC Individual Major Giving team is responsible for maximising the long-term support of all new and existing individual donors capable of giving gifts of £5,000 to £1m+ to the NSPCC.

The NSPCC’s Fundraising Directorate works collaboratively across internal teams and focuses on specific donor audiences across the fundraising spectrum. We also actively seek and work closely with external volunteers and advocates to create and make the most of the opportunities presented to us. For example, the Major Giving Department co-ordinates its activities particularly closely with the NSPCC’s ‘high value’ focused departments, namely Volunteer Boards, Corporate and Special Events.

You will be an experienced fundraiser and…

  • have great people skills and be able to operate effectively within our audience stream
  • be an excellent relationships manager, highly proactive, self-motivated and organised
  • be comfortable with targets and able to deal with competing priorities
  • enjoy working collaboratively with other colleagues, teams and departments
  • have first class written skills, telling our story in a compelling way which inspires lasting support

Above all, you will relish getting out, meeting your prospects and making the ask.

Experience of working with high value donors (particularly individuals) or clients, and proven success in achieving financial targets are highly desirable.

Company

NSPCC (the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) is a large national charity which campaigns to end child abuse and provides a range of services to children, young people and families throughout Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. NSPCC has 1,830 employees, 11,000 volunteers and an annual income of £134 million. Founded in 1884, NSPCC is governed by Royal Charter, first granted by Queen Victoria in 1895.

NSPCC specialises in child protection. It is the only UK children’s charity with statutory powers to intervene on behalf of children, powers which have existed for more than a century. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, only local authorities and the NSPCC can apply to a court for a care, supervision, or child assessment order.

NSPCC provides 24/7 helplines for both adults and children. The NSPCC helpline supports thousands of parents, professionals and families. Adults can contact by phone or online in order to get advice or share their concerns about a child, anonymously if necessary. The helpline is staffed by professional practitioners with backgrounds in areas such as teaching, health and social work. Professionals such as teachers and doctors are also encouraged to contact the helpline for information and guidance. NSPCC says the number of calls and online contacts to the helpline is increasing year by year.

ChildLine, NSPCC’s free 24/7 counselling service for children, marks its 30th anniversary during 2016. Trained ChildLine counsellors talk to children, helping them with any problems they're facing. In 2014-15, there were nearly 300,000 counselling sessions carried out between young people and ChildLine. The most common issues were family relationships, low self-esteem and unhappiness, abuse, bullying and online bullying and self-harm.

NSPCC also has over 40 service centres across the UK and the Channel Islands. At these centres, the charity works directly with children and families on a range of issues, such as protecting children from sexual abuse, drugs and alcohol misuse and neglect.

The charity also visits 9-11 year olds in schools across the country through the NSPCC Schools Service, helping them to understand what abuse is and giving them the confidence to speak out and seek help if they ever need it.

In addition to its London headquarters, NSPCC has regional offices in Luton (East of England region), Gillingham (London & South East region), Leeds (Northern region), Birmingham (West Midlands region), Plymouth (South West region), St Helier (Jersey), Belfast (Northern Ireland) and Glasgow (Scotland).
