Job Details

Are you passionate about the gift of voluntary service?

Royal Voluntary Service is a well respected national charity with big plans. An indispensable provider of voluntary service for over 80 years, Royal Voluntary Service has inspired more than three million ordinary men and women to give their time to help address some of the most challenging issues in our society. As our exciting new 5 year strategy gathers momentum, we want our unique philosophy of volunteering to motivate a Britain where millions of people are engaged in voluntary service. Our aim is to help volunteers make the crucial difference where it is most needed in our society; in our communities and in the NHS.

Our current chair will stand down after 7 years in November 2019. We are therefore seeking a dynamic, experienced and committed individual to work with our Board of Trustees and the Leadership Team in the pivitol role of Chair. You will lead the Board of Trustees to ensure that the charity is properly governed and managed with a key focus on maximising the ‘difference that the organisation makes across our society’. With a commitment to both diversity and inclusion and the effective practice of volunteering, you will demonstrate empathy with the vision, mission, aims and values of Royal Voluntary Service.

We are looking for someone with a track record of success in strategic and operational leadership and experience as a non-executive director, Trustee or Chair of a medium or large scale organisation. You will have a keen understanding of governance and the ability to combine good judgment with excellent strategic and communication skills. With the capacity to think creatively and offer fresh perspective you will bring the ability to engage at all levels internally and externally. As a visible champion for Royal Voluntary Service, you will interact with a wide range of key stakeholders and be comfortable with public facing engagements.

This is an unpaid voluntary position for which proper and reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed. The initial term will be for three years with the expectation that it will be renewed for a second term of three years.

If you are a proven strategic leader with a clear alignment with our vision, mission and values then we look forward to hearing from you. To apply or download further information on the required skills and experience for the role, please visit https://candidates.perrettlaver.com/vacancies/ quoting reference 3915.

The closing date for applications is 9am Monday 18th March 2019.

About us

Royal Voluntary Service wants to help create a society where everyone feels valued and involved whatever their age.

We are one of the largest volunteer organisations in the country. Our 35,000 volunteers help older people stay active, independent and able to continue to contribute to society. They do this by providing practical and emotional help where and when it’s needed.

Royal Voluntary Service helps in all sorts of ways:

  • We help older people get out of the house for a bite to eat, social occasions or just to see friends
  • We enjoy popping round for a chat as often as is liked
  • We will help with jobs such as doing the shopping and collecting library books
  • We can also do the simple but important things, such as changing a light bulb or fixing a lock
  • We are here to make sure older people are calm and well informed before they have appointments or a stay in hospital, and we’ll check they are ok when they get home
  • We also work on a national level to raise awareness of the issues older people face. We do this through our media campaigns and research, and by lobbying the government for age-related policy improvements.

Be part of an important and growing movement

As a charitable organisation we’ve got big plans for the future. Our aim is to reach two million older people in the next ten years. It’s incredibly important we achieve this as the UK’s older population is growing and needs more support.

Sharing time with older people is enjoyable, rewarding and inspiring for all of us, young and old. By volunteering now you can help today’s generation of older people live and enjoy the kind of old age they deserve.

To support our volunteers we run a full range of fundraising activities that enable them to continue their vital work.
