Job Details
Summary: The role reports directly to the Centre Director and as such will be a member of the senior management team, sharing collective responsibility to deliver Bobath Wales’ mission ‘to improve the quality of life of children in Wales who have cerebral palsy’.
The Head of Finance and Operations will lead a team of staff delivering financial and operational support for the charity, providing the necessary oversight, knowledge and skills to enable the charity to succeed operationally and financially. Responsibilities will include finance, IT, HR, estate management and legal compliance.
The successful candidate will have substantial management and financial experience, with relevant accountancy qualifications, preferably with a proven track record in the charity sector.
Main duties and Responsibilities:
Organisational development and management
In cooperation with the Centre Director, management team and Trustees, lead the development and implementation of the charity’s long-term strategy.
Contribute to senior management team to support effective organisational leadership including business planning, budget setting and reporting.
Review and develop organisational systems and ensure staff are supported to work effectively.
Ensure Operational expenditure is kept within budget.
Manage a team of approximately 9 staff with 3-4 direct reports.
Support the implementation of a new CRM system.
Support the charity’s growth plans in respect of premises and a potential expansion/move.
Finance
Manage and support the charity’s financial processes, reviewing and developing policies, procedures and systems to ensure sound financial management and control.
Oversee all financial processes including preparing annual budget, monthly management accounts, and monthly forecasting.
Prepare for and liaise re annual audit with the charity’s auditors.
Prepare charity SORP annual accounts following audit.
Oversee effective financial record keeping and reporting including to the Board and external stakeholders.
Support the fundraising team with income-generation functions including developing budgets and providing financial reports for fundraising.
Adhere to all codes of financial practice.
Line management & support of finance staff, including:
- Agreeing objectives and work plans
- Managing workload and performance through regular one-to-one meetings
- Plan and implement personal development programmes for team members
- Undertake annual performance reviews
Operations
Oversee all areas of charity operations including responsibility for estate management, IT, HR (with support from external advisors), governance and legal compliance, Health Board relationships.
Line management & support of Operations staff, including:
- Agreeing objectives and work plans
- Managing workload and performance through regular one-to-one meetings
- Plan and implement personal development programmes for team members
- Undertake annual performance reviews
Senior Management
The Head of Finance and Operations is a member of the charity’s senior management team and as such the post-holder will be expected to play a proactive role in the management of the charity, including:
Strategic planning.
Supporting the CEO and Trustees in all matters relating to the governance of the charity.
The charity’s development including 5- and 10- year plans implementation.
Income and expenditure budget planning and monthly forecasting.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Qualified or part-qualified accountant CCAB or CIMA
Essential Experience
Proven management experience at relevant senior level
Proven experience of contributing financial expertise to support income generating activities
Experience of working with accounting systems to produce high quality and timely management accounts
Expert level experience of Sage Accounting software
Proven experience of leading continuous improvement in relation to finance, HR, IT/ relevant areas
Experience of working collaboratively across teams to provide financial support where needed.
Experience of managing staff
Experience of working with external consultants and service providers
Proven ability to build, manage and develop key stakeholder relationships
Essential Skills and Abilities
Proven ability to think strategically and lead on organisational improvement
Ability to demonstrate a positive approach and to champion organisational change
Ability to implement and improve financial management systems
Excellent communication skills both verbal and written, with an ability to communicate and translate complex financial matters to non-financial staff and stakeholders
Ability to work collaboratively with Trustees, colleagues and external advisors
Strong leadership skills
Highly self-motivated and able to work autonomously, take initiative and make recommendations to the management team
Commitment to Bobath Wales’ core values and strategic direction
Essential knowledge and understanding
Understanding of charity accounting, SORP, The Charities Act and accepted accounting principles, tax, payroll, National Insurance and pensions legislation
Understanding of strategic risk management, finance audit and internal controls
Sound knowledge of regulation and legislation affecting charities including GDPR
Desirable skills and experience:
Diploma in Charity Accounting or CIPFA Certificate in Charity Finance & Accountancy highly desirable
Experience of overseeing a growing finance and operations function in a medium-sized charity
Experience of successful implementation of a CRM system
Welsh speaker an advantage
