About the Society:
Founded in 1830, the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) is a charity and the UK’s learned society and professional body for geography and geographers. The Society has an international reputation and a global membership of 16,000 providing intellectual, financial and volunteer support. Our programme of public, policy and educational engagement with audiences reaches several million people each year through events, our popular magazine: Geographical and online resources (including dedicated material for teachers and pupils).  Our support for the research community includes publishing five scholarly journals, convening a major annual international conference, and facilitating 31 specialist research groups. We support fieldwork and scientific expeditions through a programme of grants, training and advice. We are also home to world-renowned Collections relating to over 500 years of geographical research and exploration. In its role as a professional body, the Society offers accreditation to its Fellows through Chartered Geographer status. The Society has a sound financial base and is prudently managed, with a collegial senior team, and experienced and supportive trustees. We generate our current annual income of over £5m from a combination of membership subscriptions, operating activities, profits from the Society’s Enterprise Company and fundraising.

About the role:
As one of the senior managers at the Society, you will lead the management of the Society’s finances, the delivery of the Society’s support services, including IT and building maintenance, and the management of some of the Society’s main income streams. The role requires both a practical, ‘hands-on’ and strategic approach.

In terms of finance you will: lead the preparation of the annual financial statements; oversee statutory processes; generate reports and analyses; provide oversight, management, and stewardship of the Society’s financial assets and related processes; and support the Director and other senior colleagues in the financial management of Society activities. You will manage and support the Facilities Manager and their team in the day-to-day running of the Grade II* listed premises, including overseeing contracts for services with key suppliers, and act as the Society’s lead on significant works to the premises.

In terms of the services and functions that underpin the Society’s work you will manage and support the Membership Manager and their team, contributing to member recruitment, stewardship and retention. You will manage and support the IT Manager in the delivery of a reliable, robust and fully-available IT and communications infrastructure, and the Database Administrator in the maintenance of our contact relationship management database. You will lead decision-making on software, including databases, and our IT infrastructure. You will have oversight of risk management, and responsibility for HR, insurance, pensions and all contractual and legal matters. Where appropriate, you will be advised and supported by senior management colleagues, external advisors or consultants, and by our trustees and other officers.

Closing date: 9am on Monday 11th February 2019
Interview dates:

We anticipate first stage interviews to be held on Wednesday 6th March 2019.
Second stage interview dates are yet to be confirmed. Both will be held in central London.
