Job Details

Marine Society and Sea Cadets (MSSC) is a leading maritime charity in lifelong learning and personal development and is the governing charity of the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC), a civilian voluntary youth organisation engaging some 14,000 young people across 400 or so volunteer Sea Cadet Units, throughout the UK. The SCC offers a wide range of youth opportunities with the same enduring objective – to give young people the best possible head start in life through nautical adventure and fun.

We are seeking to appoint a Commanding Officer for TS Royalist, the flagship of the Sea Cadet Offshore fleet. The new TS Royalist, built in Spain in 2015, is a 35 metre overall square-rigged brig. The vessel undertakes 6 day voyages for up to 24 Cadets (aged 13.5 to 18) at a time, around the UK and near continent, from March to November. From December to February, the vessel undergoes winter maintenance, including a docking, usually in the Gosport area.

The key responsibilities and tasks of the Commanding Officer are to be responsible for all activity onboard the vessel, deliver a varied and exciting Sea Cadet experience, and promote the work of the MSSC and the Sea Cadet Corps.

Applicants should have the requisite square-rig sailing experience, including time in command, and hold an Offshore Yachtmaster (Sail) qualification, commercially endorsed, or Merchant Navy equivalent. They should also either hold a current Seafarer Medical Certificate, or be willing to obtain one. The ability to work effectively with young people as well as the permanent and relief crew members is essential. Ship system familiarisation, child safeguarding and any necessary sea safety course refresher training will be given to the successful applicant.

The particular demands of seagoing employment require the incumbent to be available for duty for prolonged periods and working hours necessarily need to be very flexible. Although overtime will not be recognised, the working and rest hours for this role will be within the confines of the terms of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006. The uncertain nature of the working hours are recognised by the holiday arrangements afforded.

For an informal discussion about the role please contact MSSC's Offshore Office on 02392 765888.

Applications should consist of a completed application form, and the completed equal opportunities monitoring form, both available from the website. Please feel free to submit your CV in support of your application.

Please email applications to recruitment@ms-sc.org. Alternatively, please print out and post your completed application form to Zivile Tervydyte, The Marine Society and Sea Cadets, 202 Lambeth Road, London SE1 7JW.

Closing date: Midday, Friday 1 February 2019

Interview date: week of 11 February 2019

The successful applicant will be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
