“Changing Lives Together”

The Wave Project is a registered charity (1163421) that uses surfing as a form of therapy for children and young people at risk of developing mental illness. We work with young people aged 8 to 18 who are experiencing anxiety, depression or related problems. Primarily our work is about early intervention – we work in partnership with health and social care services to support young people at the early stage of diagnosis. Our award-winning surf therapy programme helps them to feel calmer, more resilient, and more positive about themselves. We help children make friends and widen their social networks, while teaching them self-belief through overcoming a challenge.

We have evaluated over 500 detailed case studies of our work, and had this independently evaluated and peer reviewed in the Journal of Community Practitioners, which said;

“the Wave Project provides a demonstrable and cost-effective way to deliver mental health care, mentoring and social integration of young people.”

Community Practitioner, 2015; 88(1): 26–29

The Wave Project is now at an exciting point in its development. With 20 staff and a turnover of £747,000 per year, we are a “big small charity” with ambitions to grow and expand. Our ambition is to make surf therapy available to every young person in the UK by 2023.

We are now looking for an experienced trustee to take on the role of Chairperson, to help to lead our Board of Trustees to implement a new strategy to deliver this growth.

The Board will welcome applications from people who have:

  • Trustee or corporate board-level experience
  • Excellent leadership and communications skills
  • Sympathy with the aims and objectives of The Wave Project
  • Available time to undertake the duties of Chairperson.

The Board meetings take place quarterly in January, April, July and October, which the Chairperson will be expected to attend in person. The Chairperson is responsible for speaking for the Board at events and working closely with the CEO to deliver an agreed strategy.

We will also seek to involve the Chairperson in the work of the organisation outside Board meetings, for example by visiting projects, meeting staff and joining sub-committees (Finance, Education, Fundraising).

The role is unpaid but expenses are covered for duties undertaken on behalf of the charity.

To apply, please send a CV and short covering letter explaining why you would like to be considered for this position to Laura Johnston, Secretary to the Board, via email (as below); or by post at 6 Fore Street, Newquay, TR7 1LN.

To discuss the post in confidence, please contact 01637 820846.
