About Us

Over the Wall is a national children’s charity, founded by the late Paul Newman, and a member of the global SeriousFun Children’s Network. The charity provides free-of-charge residential activity ‘camps’ throughout the UK for children living with serious illness, and their families, with the purpose of addressing the isolation, loneliness, low self-confidence and self-esteem many of this 50,000+ population has to contend with.  

Although a relatively small charity, Over the Wall is ambitious, fast paced and a rapidly growing organisation, as the charts below clearly show.  

  

In November 2018, OTW received a third consecutive ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted, across every category assessed; a rare achievement and one we are very proud of.  

In addition to this current work, Over the Wall is working with Foster + Partners and several other blue-chip organisations to explore the future potential to build a UK residential facility.  

The Role 

Your leadership, as Director of Development, will be to drive the charity forward to maintain our growth trajectory through further development of our existing fundraising streams and with a new focus on legacy-giving and personal giving including engagement with high and ultra-high net worth individuals. 

We are looking for a dedicated team player with excellent leadership and communication skills and experience of leading and developing high performing teams. 

You will have excellent relationship building and entrepreneurial skills. You will also have superb written and verbal communication skills, be a skilled networker and have a thorough understanding of the UK philanthropy market. You will need to be self-driven and strategic in your planning and actions 

Remuneration 

We offer highly flexible working arrangements working as a key member of the Senior Management Team and our Board. It’s a consistent objective of ours to create and provide a fun, friendly and supportive team environment throughout the organisation.   

The working week is 4 days comprising a highly flexible mixture of home, work-based (mostly London) and head office, working. The head office is based in Havant (75 mins from Waterloo). 

There is an international component to the role with the successful applicant participating in the SeriousFun Directors of Development Group involving monthly conference call meetings and the opportunity for annual foreign travel opportunities, normally to the US.   

Salary, dependent upon the applicant’s experience and current skill level, will be in the range £50k - £65k 

Full Job Description

Purpose

To accelerate the growth of fundraising across a diversified range of income streams to achieve long term, sustainable income growth. 

To help develop and then implement a robust fundraising strategy and vision for the fundraising team, continuing the current growth trajectory. 

To develop partnerships and excellent supporter relationships to ensure a solid bedrock of income for sustainable growth.

To develop and influence significant long term income sources including high net worth individuals, legacy gifts, digital and direct marketing, trusts, events and community fundraising.

To lead, manage and support the development team.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the development and implementation of a 5 year fundraising strategy that underpins strategic business plan goals -  including key fundraising activities, areas of required investment, KPIs and milestones as well as the projected growth of fundraising income

Grow income from HNWI and manage key relationships with committee members

Accelerate sustainable income growth across a diverse range of income streams and embed a culture of fundraising across the organisation

Inspire and develop fundraising personnel

To lead on the development and delivery of the philanthropic giving strategy and further develop our fundraising programmes aimed at current and new major donors.

To establish and grow a portfolio of mid and major donors that provide a sustainable source of income and donations in-kind to the charity

Establish new income streams, with a particular emphasis on the application of digital technology.

Establish supporter segmentation and journeys to ensure a positive and professional donor experience.

Donor cultivation; identify and develop donor networks and appropriate propositions, establishing a calendar of major donor solicitation events

Work closely with the Director of Services to develop and implement an OTW family donor journey which starts at camp and establishes the basis for an ongoing relationship with OTW families, both through their direct support and through their own networks.

Establish structure, processes, competencies and systems to ensure the fundraising department is fully equipped to accelerate growth, establish a diversified and sustainable income base, and improve the public’s understanding and awareness of OTW

Work closely with the CEO and remainder of the SMT to provide leadership to the organisation as a wholeFeed into the development and implementation of the strategic plans of the charity.
