The Royal College of General Practitioners is the largest membership organisation solely for GPs in the United Kingdom. General practice is the largest branch of the medical profession. It provides some 1 million consultations for patients in the UK every working day and deals with 86% of the health problems experienced by the UK population.

This is a high-profile role acting as a trusted professional adviser to senior officers and colleagues. The role will be responsible for ensuring the provision of timely and accurate management information. This information will be complex, due to overseeing multiple technical consolidation issues and subject to frequent board scrutiny. This role will be decision making and there will be the need to offer expert professional guidance to multiple stakeholders across the organisation. 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead decision making in management of the balance sheet processes and controls
  • Responsible for complex monthly reconciliations and ensure timely and accurate reporting of the balance sheet of £50m
  • Embed continuous improvement mindset relating to processes and controls
  • Improve forecasting processes across the organisation
  • Assist in preparation of annual financial statements through successful consolidation of 32 faculties, 3 devolved councils and 2 trading subsidiaries
  • Prepare audit schedules for all entities
  • Manage oversight of investment portfolio, value £10m
  • Improve the effectiveness of working capital management
  • Preparation and review of fund reconciliations
  • Preparation of complex VAT returns including fully VATable, partially exempt and exempt activities for the faculties
  • Lead finance processing team and line manage assistant accountants
  • Provide expert technical support and guidance to budget managers and staff across the organisation
  • Ensure direct reports maintain processing of all transactions in a timely and accurate manner

Key Result Areas:

  • Preparation of the College’s periodic reconciliations to agreed timescale
  • Take ownership of financial processes and improve where necessary
  • Publication and presentation of financial reports and advice to stakeholders
  • Prepare and review quarterly VAT returns and Income & Expenditure accounts for 3 group companies
  • Manage fixed asset register with a value of £70m
  • Manage relationship with investment managers and supervision of portfolio value £10m
  • Provide expert professional advice, support and guidance to budget managers and staff
  • Monitor existing financial controls and implement improvements where necessary
  • Manage the finance processing team, with responsibility for performance and development of team members
  • Any other ad hoc duties as requested by the Group Financial Controller
  • Be an interested and active member of the staff team within the Finance department working closely with others and in line with our people values to ensure that the College is seen to be a responsive, courteous and efficient organisation both by its members and other key audiences.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with the College’s Health & Safety Policies and procedures.
  • To take responsibility for the provision of health and safety for themselves and the compliance of other employees/colleagues in own service area.

Qualifications

Educated to degree level and CCAB qualified accountant

Experience

  • Qualified accountant with relevant experience of assisting senior financial or management accountants
  • Experience of line management
  • Experience of reviewing, monitoring and implementing processes and controls
  • Assistance in Budget preparation
  • Producing short to medium term financial forecasts and projections
  • Working to tight deadlines and planning and allocation of resources to meet defined targets
  • Use of Great Plains
  • Experience of providing high quality customer support
  • Developing and maintaining spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel
  • Use of Microsoft Office programs
  • Reporting to managers at senior and intermediate level
  • Preparation of VAT returns in the charity sector preferable
  • Producing ad hoc financial reports

Knowledge

  • Knowledge and understanding of the recommended accounting standards and principles that have an impact on the College, including requirements under Companies Acts.
  • Knowledge and application of best practices as recommended by the Charity Commission.
  • Knowledge and application of financial reporting, including fund accounting
  • Detailed understanding of VAT, including partial exemption calculations
