Communications Assistant (Charity)

Our client is Africa’s leading health charity. They work with women and girls to secure the right to health and break the cycle of poverty. Headquartered in Nairobi, they are a truly African organisation, partnering with communities across the continent to create lasting change.

Our client has country offices in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, along with regional hubs in South Africa and Senegal. Our client is one of ten offices in Europe and North America. Their team of 18 is composed of Programmes, Fundraising and Communications, and Finance and Administration functions. They manage a portfolio of innovative health programmes funded by a range of donors including institutions, corporates, trusts and foundations, and individual supporters. Their programmes address four crucial and complementary themes: Maternal, New-born and Child Health; Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights; Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH); and Health Worker Training. As the world strives to meet the Sustainable Development Goal of Universal Health Coverage by 2030, our client is committed to removing the barriers that impede access to healthcare - ensuring that no-one is left behind.

This is an exciting time to join the Communications team with our client. With a high-profile communications and fundraising campaign lined up for 2019, they’re poised to expand their reach, amplify their voice, and bring the stories of the people they work with - fighting every day to secure the right to health for their communities - to a range of new audiences, both on- and off-line.

In their communications, our client endeavours to portray the places they work and the people they support in an accurate, nuanced, and respectful way. Instead of speaking for them, they provide a platform for them to tell their own stories. The Communications Assistant will contribute to this mission.

Position: Communications Assistant
Location: London N1
Job type: Full Time, Fixed Term Contract (January to September 2019, with the possibility of renewal)
Salary: £22,440 per annum

Closing date: Monday 12th November
Interviews will take place on the 19th and 20th November

About the role:

This role is ideal for a junior communications / marketing professional who wants to use their skills to further a fantastic charitable cause and be able to hone their craft in a fast-paced international environment. They are looking for someone who, like them, believes there is room for improvement in the way the global development community communicates about its work.

The Communications Assistant reports directly to the full-time Communications Manager. The Communications Assistant will play a key role in engaging with our client’s different audiences, primarily online, with a view to raising their profile and mobilising support for their work. This is a new position, meaning that the successful applicant can really make it their own.

About you:

The successful applicant will hold a bachelor’s degree in communications / marketing or a related subject, or equivalent professional experience in communications / marketing, and will display a real passion for the work our client does. You will quickly come to understand our client’s vision and voice, and be able to convey these to different audiences, primarily through social media. You will be able to build a strong sense of community online.

You will be a skilled and confident writer with the ability to tell compelling stories about the company’s work. You will have experience (ideally in a professional context, but voluntary experience is also welcome) of social media and community management, and of adapting a message to different audiences.

You will thrive as part of a small, dynamic team, but enjoy working independently. You will have an understanding of African health and development issues, and the global development sector more generally, along with a passion for women’s and girls’ rights.

Working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite (particularly Photoshop and InDesign) would be advantageous, as would a sound understanding of the principles of SEO, and the ability to apply them. Experience of working for a charity or non-profit organisation, along with a working knowledge of Google Analytics and Google AdWords, would also be welcome.

You may have experience of the following: Communications Assistant, Marketing Assistant, Communications Officer, Communications Executive, Marketing Officer, Marketing Executive, Marketing Communications, Junior, Graduate etc.
