“Even though we are locked up someone is listening to us”

Music In Detention takes participatory arts into immigration detention centres and then takes detainees’ creative work out again, to groups living difficult lives in communities near the centres and to the public in general.  Our work helps detainees to cope with detention, and people in the wider community to understand their experience of it.  We use shared experiences of music and the arts to build supportive relationships between detainees and other communities.  You can find stories about our work, and lots of music tracks, at www.musicindetention.org.uk.

Set up in 2006, MID is a highly respected, specialist charity with a strong track record.  Following a strategy review, we have set ambitious goals for strengthening social impact and artistic quality over the next six years.  We are now looking for able and motivated individuals to join our Board of Trustees, to help lead and guide this important work.

We’re especially interested in hearing from people with:

  • Personal experience of immigration detention / as a migrant in the UK
  • Extensive experience as an artist / arts practitioner / arts sector professional
  • A background in communications
  • Senior experience in charity finance

We are looking for people who are excited by MID’s work, share our values and will play an active part in the work of our Board.

MID's Board meets 4 times a year in London.  We also seek to involve Trustees in the work of the organisation outside of Board meetings, for example by visiting music workshops once in a while, and joining sub-committees (Finance, Communications & Fundraising, Ethics). We pay travel expenses but of course the role of Trustee is unpaid.

For more information please go to our website (link provided).  If you have any queries please contact MID’s Director, John Speyer, on john@musicindetention.org.uk or 07828 065624.  To register your interest please email John with a little information about your experience and what you would bring to the role.
