Company
The Royal Dockyard at Chatham (Kent) was established in Tudor times. In the 17th Century it became Britain’s fleet base before becoming its principal warship construction and repair yard of the age of sail in the 18th Century. The dockyard played a pivotal role during this period, supporting the Royal Navy to secure worldwide command of the oceans and in doing so, laying the foundations for Britain’s future trade and the country’s economic prosperity.
The dockyard closed in 1984 leading to mass unemployment, high levels of deprivation and loss of community pride and wellbeing. At the time of closure, Government established Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust (CHDT) as an independent charitable trust (no. 292101) to take stewardship of the dockyard of the age of sail, an 80 acre site which contains 100 buildings, 47 scheduled ancient monuments, 12 Grade I and 32 Grade II* listed buildings. The Trust has two charitable objectives: preservation and education. CHDT’s key business strategy is one of ‘preservation through re-use’ - an entrepreneurial approach that involves key strategic investments in buildings to make them available for appropriate re-use and as places where people live, work and visit, generating resilient income streams that will eventually lead to the Trust’s sustainable future whilst also meeting charitable purposes. Today, The Historic Dockyard is a vibrant mixed-use site with 400 residents, over 100 businesses and 170,000+ visitors per annum. Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust has an impressive track record in delivering major capital projects and has won a number of prestigious awards including a Europa Nostra Medal, the National Lottery Awards’ Best Education Project, the Beautiful South’s Large Tourist Attraction of the Year Award and most recently a Sandford Award for Heritage Education.
