It’s All Academic…

We seek a motivated and intellectually curious individual with outstanding relationship building skills to join our highly successful Office of the Vice-Provost (Advancement) in the role of Strategic Philanthropy Manager, Principal Gifts.

Philanthropy at UCL is about more than raising funds to support projects – it is about breaking down barriers, providing opportunities, and supporting the University to challenge convention, think differently and solve global challenges. In late 2016, UCL launched a bold, global philanthropic It’s All Academic Campaign with the goal of raising £600 million; to date we have raised over £473 million toward this goal. The heart of the campaign is the radical, disruptive thinking that has been at the core of UCL since our founding in 1826. Our principal gift activity is essential in us reaching our full Campaign goal. Our approach to principal gifts is forward-thinking and collaborative, it’s unique, just like UCL’s culture.

As a Strategic Philanthropy Manager, you will be a key figure within UCL’s Principal Gift team. You will build highly strategic relationships with a diverse range of partners in order to raise income at the seven and eight figure level from individual philanthropists, family trusts, foundations and corporate supporters to support our Campaign priority projects, including our new campus UCL East.

You will play a critical role in connecting UCL’s senior academic community and OVPA’s leadership team with philanthropists in the UK and overseas and will undertake frequent travel on behalf of, and alongside, the University’s senior leadership team.

The ideal candidate will have significant fundraising or business development experience with a focus on corporate relationships, a proven track record of securing income and investment at the seven and eight figure level and a passion for securing new business. You will excel in working within a results-oriented environment and bring demonstrable experience of establishing creditability and managing a complex set of relationships with high net worth individuals and stakeholders across wide ranging organisations. We are pleased to accept applications from individuals who possess transferable skills and experience drawn from other sectors, as well as from candidates seeking part-time opportunities. We particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates, as they are under-represented within UCL at this level.

We know that our people are our greatest asset and in return we provide an empowering, values-based environment where personal and professional growth are invested in. We offer agile working and flexibility around working hours. We also value mutual respect and collaboration and have a strong customer-service ethic. Expectations are high, and we work hard, but the rewards are huge.

UCL is an outstanding place to work. We welcome people from all backgrounds and strive to create an environment where everyone can give of their best. Working with some of the greatest intellects in the world, you will also be entitled to a generous pension scheme and holiday allowance.

We are being supported in this search by executive search firm Perrett Laver. Applications should consist of a full CV and covering letter detailing academic and professional qualifications, employment history, latest remuneration and relevant achievements. For further particulars and to apply for this role, please visit https://candidates.perrettlaver.com/vacancies/, quoting reference 3830. The closing date for applications is 4th December, 2018.

Company

UCL (University College London) is a public university based in central London. Ranked as one of the top ten universities in the world, UCL is also the top-rated UK university for research strength. It has over 12,000 members of staff (840 professors and more than 6,000 academic and research staff) and nearly 36,000 students. UCL has the largest number of postgraduate students of any UK university.

UCL was founded in 1826 by followers of the philosopher Jeremy Bentham. In 1878 it became the first university in England to admit women on equal terms with men. UCL is a founding constituent of the University of London though it awards its own degrees and has separate governance. UCL is affiliated to prominent London teaching hospitals such as the University College London NHS Foundation Trust, the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, Moorfields Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital.

Nobel Prizes have been awarded to 29 people who are, or were, students or academics at UCL. Famous alumni include Gandhi, Alexander Graham Bell, Francis Crick, athlete Christine Ohuruogu and film director Christopher Nolan.

UCL is a founder member of the Russell Group, an association of 24 public research universities in the UK which first convened in 1994.

UCL’s academic structure consists of 11 faculties. The faculties are: Arts & Humanities, The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment, Brain Sciences, Engineering, the UCL Institute of Education, the Faculty of Laws, Life Sciences, Mathematical & Physical Sciences, Medical Sciences, Population Health Sciences and Social & Historical Sciences.

Just over half of the nearly 36,000-strong UCL student community are engaged in graduate studies and around a third of graduate students are pursuing research degrees. Students from 150 countries study at UCL and non-UK students make up more than one third of the student body. UCL also has two campuses overseas – in Adelaide in Australia and Doha in Qatar.

UCL also manages several museums and collections including the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, the Grant Museum of Zoology and an Art Museum.  It owns the 547 seat Bloomsbury Theatre which is currently closed until 2018.

According to a 2013 UCL staff survey, 83% of UCL staff would recommend the university as a good place to work. Employee benefits include 41 days annual leave, inclusive of public holidays and closure days.
