At Sue Ryder we provide 2.3 million hours of expert medical, practical and emotional support every year, in our 11 hospices and neurological care centres, in people’s homes and in the community. We support people through the most difficult times of their lives. Whether that’s a terminal illness, the loss of a loved one or a neurological condition, we’re there when it matters. Our doctors, nurses and carers give people the compassion and expert care they need to help them live the best life they possibly can.
Our work is all about making a real difference to people’s lives. Demand for the palliative, neurological and bereavement support we provide has never been higher and we have ambitious plans for growth - to deliver more care for more people. Our new Senior Project Manager will be instrumental in making sure that our five year strategy targets are achieved.
Reporting to the Programme Manager for Sue Ryder’s strategic change programme, you will provide practical support and guidance to the strategic project leads and their teams within the charity to enable them to achieve their planned deliverables on time and within budget. You will focus on strengthening project planning and provide project management expertise, as well as providing additional resource where needed. You’ll work closely with the Programme Manager to support and facilitate the strategic change programme steering groups, and ensure that central reporting is carried out to drive the overall efficiency of the programme.
Drawing on your previous experience of leading and managing multiple projects, you’ll support and co-ordinate teams effectively to help them keep track of deadlines, and find the most favourable option to complete the tasks, whilst ensuring quality is delivered throughout.
The role
• Support strategic project leads to create or improve project plans for all strategic projects, so that they can use these to actively manage the projects and feed into the relevant steering group reviews
• Create an overall programme project plan, based on the underlying strategic project plans, to show project/workstream dependencies and resourcing constraints
• Run stakeholder workshops to do additional structuring on projects that need more scoping, based on a prioritised list of where they are needed most
• Create a project management support network & resources for project leads within Sue Ryder
• Provide support for the overall strategic change programme by facilitating steering group meetings, preparing programme management status reports, and supporting programme risks & issues reporting when needed.
About you
• Educated to degree level or equivalent, with a recognised project management qualification, the successful candidate will possess demonstrable experience of successfully leading major projects and managing change in a large scale setting, within the third sector and preferably in a healthcare or social care environment.
• You will have a strong leadership presence and a proven ability in delivering projects of the highest quality on schedule and within budget, with experience of drawing on a range of project management methodologies and processes to enhance project delivery
• You will not have a rigid approach to project management, but will be able to guide and facilitate in a style that supports the project leads in the organisation where needed.
• You will have experience of working as part of cross-functional teams in order to achieve objectives, and you will have the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of professionals and to facilitate outcomes through working in project groups.
• An excellent team player with a flexible attitude, you will possess strong communication skills. You will be confident in interacting with both external and internal stakeholders at all levels; you will also be able to persuade others, with tact and diplomacy.

Company
Sue Ryder is a large, national charity that provides hospice, neurological care and homecare, treating more conditions that any other UK charity. It contributes 2.7 million hours of care each year and campaigns to improve the lives of people who have life-changing conditions. Sue Ryder has more than 3,000 staff, 12,000 volunteers and an annual income of around £95 million. It has offices in Suffolk, London and Doncaster.
Sue Ryder also has one of the largest chains of charity shops in the country with more than 450 outlets.
Sue Ryder takes its name from its founder who was in the Special Operations Executive in World War Two. The charity was formed in 1952 with the opening of the first Sue Ryder care home in Suffolk, which catered for concentration camp survivors. Later the scope of the charity widened to offer care for cancer patients and people with life-threatening conditions and complex needs.
Sue Ryder now has seven hospices across the UK providing care and support for people with palliative, long-term and end-of-life needs. Each hospice offers the choice of care at home or in-patient care. All palliative care services are free of charge for the people who need them.
There are also five Sue Ryder neurological care centres – in Aberdeen, Preston, Holme upon Spalding Moor, Ipswich and Hitchin. These are for people with conditions that get worse over time such as multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease or Huntingdon’s, as well as conditions resulting from a brain or spinal injury or a stroke.
Sue Ryder offers a range of support, from long-term residential care, to services that help people improve or regain their abilities and remain at home. Expert teams working in the community enable beneficiaries to remain independent. Services include community cafes, self-management programmes and referrals to other assistance.
Sue Ryder has become increasingly involved in public service provision. In 2011 NHS Berkshire West outsourced all its palliative care services to the charity, which included a hospice, hospice-at-home, outpatient clinics and day therapy units. In December 2011, Sue Ryder launched a 24-hour palliative care and support service throughout Bedfordshire.
Sue Ryder also campaigns for people with life-changing conditions. A current campaign, Dying doesn’t work 9 to 5, aims to ensure terminally ill people and their carers have immediate access to 24/7 expert support.
Sue Ryder is a major fundraising charity, needing to raise £42.5 million a year to keep its services running. Employee benefits include 25 days annual holiday entitlement, rising to 27 days after five years, a group personal pension scheme and a childcare voucher scheme.
There are also independent Sue Ryder charities in other countries – in Poland, the Czech Republic, Albania, Malawi, Ireland and Italy.
