We use our muscles constantly to walk, talk, breathe, read, drink, speak and eat. But 70,000 children, adults and their families in the UK today live with a muscle-wasting condition. Muscular Dystrophy UK is the largest UK charity bringing individuals, families and professionals together to beat muscle-wasting conditions. Founded in 1959, we have been leading the fight against muscle-wasting conditions since then, through funding research, driving faster and wider access to treatments and providing a range of services to support people to live as independently as possible. We bring together all those living with more than 60 rare and very rare progressive muscle-weakening and wasting conditions.

As part of our new strategic plan to support more families, improve patient care and increase research, we have plans to invest and to grow our current income of £6.5m per annum. The Director of Development will lead a team of 36 staff across the UK and develop and implement strategies, plans and budgets that will drive income across all income streams, particularly from community and corporate sources. They will support team members to develop their maximum potential and embrace new opportunities in order to support our growth. Working closely with a newly formed Senior Executive Team, the Director of Development will also play a key part in leading the overall direction of an ambitious charity. 

We are seeking an individual with a proven track record of successful fundraising, including from community sources, and strong knowledge of the full range of income streams. You will be comfortable at operating both strategically and operationally and experienced at developing strategies as well as the plans needed to translate these strategies into income growth. You will enjoy leading, motivating and developing talented staff members wherever they are located and working closely and collaboratively with colleagues, using an energetic and solutions-focussed approach. We work closely with the families we support and are looking for someone who will enjoy getting to know them and their stories and who will be passionate about the support we offer them.
