Job Details

The Church of England Pensions Board provides retirement services for those who have served or worked for the Church. It is the Trustee of four pension schemes and administers pensions for over 40,000 people working for more than 520 employers and is a charity which houses around 2500 retired clergy and their dependants, mainly through affordable rental housing, shared ownership, and supported living schemes. Pensions and charitable funds under investment total in excess of £2.6bn and the Pensions Board actively engages with companies it invests in, in line with its robust, industry-leading ethical investment policies.

This is an exciting time to join us, as the Pensions Board continues to deliver a significant programme of transformational change. We have recently welcomed a new Chief Executive and is in the process of appointing a new Chair for its Board.

We are now seeking to appoint two co-opted Members for our Audit & Risk Committee. These are not Board roles, but this is an important committee with a broad remit across financial reporting, internal control and risk management, compliance, whistleblowing and fraud, systems failure and internal and external audit. As a member of the Committee, one of your initial tasks will be to engage in the retendering of our External Audit instruction early in 2019.

One of our new Members will bring practical experience of the Pensions SORP (statement of recommended practice) and the second, practical experience of the Charities SORP. Candidates must be qualified accountants, with current or very recent and relevant experience gained at a senior level in a complex organisation. You will have a demonstrable senior level track record as an Auditor/Finance Director, Audit Committee Member or Chair from a large charity or from an organisation with a charitable status, from large Pension funds/boards/organisations or will be a senior Accountant or Consultant with a specialism in Charity or Pension SORPs.

Previous knowledge of the Church of England is not required as it is through your broader experience, insight, intellectual rigour and judgement that you will bring to the Committee.  With a sound grasp of corporate governance, you will be politically astute and capable of independent judgement and you will have the credibility, integrity and expertise necessary to operate as part of a high-profile committee, maintaining the highest standards of conduct and ethics.

The Committee meets four times a year in January, May, July and October. The appointments are unremunerated, carry a three-year term and are to commence from 1 January 2019.

Closing date: 12 noon Friday 9 November.
