As we exit the EU, the Department for International Trade’s Policy Advisers have a rare opportunity to develop and deliver the UK’s new independent trade policy, and shape the future of UK trade around the world.
About the roles
We are currently recruiting in the following areas:
Trade policy development and negotiation, working closely with other Government departments and non-government stakeholders to define the specific policy objectives which matter most to the UK.
Country Negotiations, , with responsibility for bilateral trade relations with key future UK trading partners.
Planning, delivery and capability, leading a process of consultation on the UK’s new trade policy with Parliament, Devolved Nations, business, and wider interest groups.
As an SEO or HEO, your role will involve:
- Researching and developing policy thinking
- Building relationships with partner countries
- Building effective processes for managing policy development
- Providing oral and written reporting on policy and projects
- Handling Parliamentary and public correspondence
- Engaging with stakeholders across government and externally.

About you
We are looking for candidates who can:
- Apply structured tools and techniques to policy development
- Develop oral briefings
- Work collaboratively and effectively in teams
- Demonstrate skills in programme and project management.
As a minimum, you must demonstrate:
- Persuasive and influential communication skills
- Resilience and adaptability
- Good judgement and political understanding
- Experience using analytical skills to drive evidence-based decision making
- The ability to compile, assimilate, distil, interpret and present evidence and options, drawing upon experts as appropriate
- The ability to deliver efficiently and effectively, even when working with uncertainty and ambiguity.
The following are also desirable:
- International or EU experience
- Experience developing and applying trade policy
- For certain roles, you’ll require specific skills such knowledge of agile principles or project management delivery.
