Head of What Works Team
Learning and Work Institute is an independent policy, research and development organisation dedicated to promoting lifelong learning, full employment and inclusion.
We are focused on the big questions, such as how can we help people navigate a changing world of work and how do we fund and deliver successful learning, skills and employment services when money is tight. Our vision is for a prosperous and fair society in which learning and work provide opportunities for everyone to realise their potential and ambitions throughout life.
The Head of What Works will lead a new, high profile What Works team, bringing together, sharing and supporting the use of evidence in ‘what works’ in learning, skills and employment. The team will focus on:
- Bringing together evidence on what works in employment, skills and learning and make this accessible for those designing, commissioning and delivering services
- Disseminating findings in ways that are targeted, meaningful and useful for those audiences
- Supporting their practical application – using networks (established and new), training and support, events and seminars, and bespoke consultancy and support
- Becoming financially self-sufficient over the next three years, through its research and support programme, partnerships, products and services, training and events
The Team will be UK-wide and encompass ‘what works’ in adult learning, post-16 education and skills (excluding higher education) and employment support for those in and out of work. It will be evidence based but pragmatic – focused on delivering useful, timely and expert insight and support to policymakers and commissioners in local and central government and those delivering services. Its work will include thematic reviews of what works; developing resources and toolkits; analysis of labour market and skills data; and masterclasses, seminars and knowledge-sharing events.
We are looking for someone with a deep expertise in applied research on learning, skills and/ or employment; an understanding of service design and delivery; a strong track record of working in partnerships; and a passion for helping others to do what works. You’ll also need a commercial mindset to identify opportunities to develop income and the sustainability of the team.
In return, you'll have the chance to shape, lead and deliver a unique and exciting programme of work and to be part of a dynamic and committed team.
