Job Details

This role is a new post within the Communications team, which is responsible for maximising awareness of the Charity's UK work and the issue of avoidable blindness among our target audiences. The Communications team forms part of the External Relations directorate alongside teams responsible for Individual Giving; Trusts and Foundations, Major Donors, Corporate Partnerships, Institutional Relationships and Community Fundraising (Key Donors); Middle East Partnerships, and Advocacy.

Description

Strategic Communications

  • Work with the rest of the Communications team to develop and implement the Charity's communications strategy 2019-2021 in support of the global strategic plan

  • Research and advise on communications opportunities, reputational risks and benefits of new corporate partner opportunities

Media & PR

  • Develop relationships with key media and journalists (specifically across the aviation and health sectors), including international development and regional media, influencers and bloggers

  • Draft and issue press releases and sell in stories

  • Respond to media requests for information about our programme and fundraising work

  • Maintain oversight of the media monitoring service

  • Work with the Communications Manager to identify opportunities and submit applications for awards

General communications

  • Work with the team to develop rich content for use across all the UK digital channels

  • Write and edit copy for the Charity's digital channels (social and web) and marketing materials

  • Protect and develop the Charity's brand, ensuring all usage is within the current corporate identity guidelines

  • Collate quarterly reports on communications outcomes

  • Help maintain and develop departmental systems and processes

Fundraising support:

  • Manage the production of fundraising collateral and merchandise e.g. t-shirts, thank you cards, event invitations, banners etc

  • Develop a plan to maximise press opportunities for corporate partnerships, key donor and community activity

  • Provide PR support for other fundraising events and appeals/campaigns (e.g. UK AID Match)

  • Attend fundraising events as required

  • Continue to develop knowledge and skills required to fulfil the responsibilities of the position

  • As a small charitable organisation all staff are expected to work as a close team, to be flexible in their duties and to provide cover for other areas as necessary

  • Occasional travel abroad may be necessary

Profile

  • Proven experience of delivering communications in-house or at an agency

  • A solid communicator with a track record of establishing and maintaining good relationships with journalists, influencers and key stakeholders

  • Writing and distributing press releases and securing coverage

  • Strong and engaging copywriting skills, writing for a range of audiences and channels

  • Knowledge of the fundraising environment

  • Experience of collateral production

  • Ability to prioritise and meet deadlines

  • Creative thinking, problem solving and analytical skills

  • Good presentation and public speaking skills

  • Excellent IT skills with experience of digital media

  • Content management systems
