Job Title: Head of Young People’s Programme

Department & Team: Young People’s Programme

Location: Sage Gateshead and may include some regional and national travel.

Working Hours: 36 hours per week. The role will include some evening & weekend work.

Overall purpose of the job

Main purpose of job:

  • To provide exceptional management for Sage Gateshead’s Young People’s Programme (YPP) in line with organisation-wide management standards.
  • To lead and support a team of Managers to produce high quality creative learning programmes, maximising opportunities for children and young people within Sage Gateshead and with partner organisations in the North East.
  • To champion excellence and inclusion.
  • To be part of Sage Gateshead’s Senior Management Team.  

    Main Duties and responsibilities
     

    General Management

  • To provide clear structured management for the Young People’s Programme in line with organisation wide systems and management standards
  • To ensure activities are co-ordinated and structured, responsibilities are clearly defined, individuals are developed and team performance is managed, to support maximum effectiveness in planning and implementation of strategy
  • To work closely with YPP team, Operations, Business Support, Finance, HR, Marketing and Communications teams, RNS and Classical and Popular and Contemporary Programmers, Musicians, participants, students and families, visiting artists, external partners

    Financial Management and KPIs

  • To create, monitor and report accurately on YPP annual budgets and meet agreed financial targets
  • To manage the YPP annual cycle, monitor and manage performance against KPIs (finance / HR contracts/ marketing, sales and recruitment)
  • To develop effective business models
  • To ensure effective use of bursaries, pricing and charging and remove financial barriers to participation
  • To work closely with the Fundraising team to ensure company fundraising targets are met and reporting is completed to deadline

    YPP Managers Team

  • To effectively line and task manage Programme Managers, managing their performance and supporting their development
  • To provide challenge and guidance for Programme Managers, supporting them with decision making and enabling them to work to their full potential
  • To work with Programme Managers and Head of HR to effectively manage HR issues in the YPP

    Programme Planning

  • To manage and communicate quarterly and annual programme plans, artistic schedules, timetables and decision-making timelines
  • To work closely with the Operations Manager to plan and manage the use of spaces in our Music Education Centre for the YPP
  • To manage a schedule of staff attendance at rehearsals, performances, events, project visits and observations
  • To manage planned changes to the programme where required 

    Communications

  • To ensure YPP quarterly reporting is high quality and deadlines are met
  • To work in partnership with the marketing team to produce excellent external marketing and communications, including website, films, sales and recruitment and campaigns
  • To attend and manage a schedule of programme meetings, ensuring the meetings are effectively chaired, convened and noted with information communicated as required 
  • To ensure effective internal communications, including flow of information to and from internal meetings
  • Respond to enquiries from partner organisations where required

    Child Protection, Safeguarding and Pastoral Care

  • To work closely with Sage Gateshead’s Designated Child Protection Officer and Head of Building Services to ensure appropriate safeguarding for children and young people throughout the programme
  • To work closely with Programme Coordinators and relevant colleagues to maintain consistency and high standards of pastoral care

    Company Policy

  • To advocate for North Music Trust, and specifically the YPP at meetings and events, regionally and nationally as required
  • To accept appropriate individual responsibility for the observance, promotion and implementation of Health & Safety, Child Protection Customer Care, Equality and Diversity, Dignity at Work and other policies with the Trust
  • To undertake other duties appropriate to the post and in line with the needs of the organization

Knowledge, experience and skills required to do job

Essential (required):

  • Minimum A level standard of education or equivalent
  • At least three years of experience at Senior Management level
  • At least three years’ experience of managing learning/ music education activity
  • Working with musicians/ artists in educational or participatory arts settings
  • Excellent programme management skills, including:
  • A strong understanding of financial evaluation and experience as budget holder with extensive budget management experience
  • Contracting staff
  • Line and task management
  • Programme planning
  • Performance and events scheduling in a learning context
  • Systems management
  • Good knowledge, experience and understanding in relation to:
  • Safeguarding and child protection policies and protocols
  • Health and Safety and risk assessment
  • Good understanding of work with children and young people experiencing challenging circumstances
  • Knowledge of music education
  • Understanding of inclusion and social outcomes of learning and participation
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including report and copy writing
  • Skills and confidence in communicating with people from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Accomplished in Microsoft tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, database management, especially Tessitura and Artifax
  • The ability to manage your own workload, working on your own initiative and as part of a team
  • Excellent attention to detail

Desirable (optional):

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Management qualification
  • Experience of a performing arts organisation
  • Knowledge of and passion for at least one of the following areas of music:
  • Choral
  • Classical
  • Folk and traditional
  • Jazz and improvised
  • Pop and rock
  • Urban
  • Electronic
