Executive Director – Congregation of Our Lady, Canonesses of St Augustine CIO
Location: London, with substantial travel as needed. Opportunity for some home working
Salary: circa £75,000 full time equivalent
Hours: 2.5 days a week – the working rhythm will necessarily be flexible
The Congregation of Our Lady, Canonesses of St Augustine, is an international Roman Catholic religious order. There have been sisters in Great Britain since 1904. Currently, 23 sisters form the Delegation of Great Britain within the wider organisation.
In the UK, The Congregation of Our Lady, Canonesses of St. Augustine CIO (the Congregation) is a recently incorporated charitable organisation consisting of a congregation of nuns led by Sister Jennifer Dines (Sister Jenny), the Delegate, who has guided the organisation through the process of incorporation.
The charity’s purpose is a) to ensure the physical and spiritual well-being of the 23 sisters, now nearly all elderly, until the end of their lives, and b) to pursue its educational commitment as much as it can.
The sisters belong to a worldwide order of nuns, Congrégation Notre-Dame, and whilst the organisation in the UK is an independent charity, this connection to the global community with its headquarters in Paris is an important one.
The trustees have decided to appoint a suitable lay person to help prepare all decisions that are necessary to meet the charity’s objectives, by way of strategic planning, including action plans necessary to simplify the charity’s structure over the next few years. A key aspect of the role will be working with the trustees and the wider community to set a vision for the charity, and developing a plan to realise it.
This is a new position for the organisation, and although there is a job description, the successful candidate will work with the trustees and sisters to fully shape the role. It is a senior position and its remit will take in all the different aspects of community life.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the following qualities:
- Senior leader with experience of strategy development and implementation
- Track record of successful team management
- Excellent communication and listening skills, and an empathy with older people
- Broad experience of general management, to include financial, legal, HR / employment, service provision, facilities / property management, etc
- Understanding and sympathy with the ethos, values and aims of a small Roman Catholic religious order and its educational objectives, and willingness to develop this further
