There are an estimated 50 million donkeys and mules worldwide. Most are working to support livelihoods in some of the poorest and most marginalised communities in the world and have a vital role to play in human happiness and survival. Many need care and protection from a life of suffering and neglect. Focusing on the relationships between working animals and the communities which depend upon them, we work in partnership with global influencers to effect change for millions of animals and their owners.  With a presence in over 40 countries and a strong ambition to take our work to scale, we are launching our next 5-year strategy in 2019, where we will focus on impact through systems strengthening, and effective policy change which will translate to change at a one health-one welfare level.

To support the above, we are looking to appoint an interim Global Programmes Director to provide a bridging period as we deliver a comprehensive change management process of our global work. This is a key role and you will work alongside the Executive Director of Operations, leading a team to identify themes and priorities to reach the donkeys most in need around the world. This will involve piloting new ways of working internationally, while developing strong collaborative partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders worldwide. You will be responsive and flexible, will anticipate and respond to future activities, opportunities and issues, and will develop programmes and resources globally to produce sustainable solutions for donkeys in need, involving the transition of regional programmes through our Regional Directors and ensuring agile, innovative and effective ways of working.

Educated to degree level, or possessing relevant equivalent experience, you will bring with you a catalogue of experience in leading international programmes through an extensive change management process, ideally with a background in livelihoods and systems strengthening.  Managing a team in the UK of 20 staff and supporting the roll out of new regions, your primary focus will be to support your dedicated team during a period of extensive and significant change. This appointment requires an innovative and inspiring senior leader who can demonstrate experience of managing international programmes and developing high performing teams as well as leading cultural change. A track record of strategic decision making, leadership and management, and of delivering high-performance services in a relevant field is essential, as are excellent communication skills, the ability to take a considered and clear view on the big issues and extensive experience of working and managing grants from donors such as USAID, DFID, EU and UN agencies.

If you feel you have the qualifications, skills and experience to fulfil this varied and rewarding role, and would like to be part of the evolutional program of change currently taking place within the charity, we would love to hear from you. Based in Sidmouth, Devon, within an area of outstanding natural beauty, this is a full-time, 6 month fixed term contract, starting as soon as possible.

Closing date for completed applications: 12.30pm on Friday 5th October 2018.

Please note: We reserve the right to close the vacancy prior to this date, and therefore encourage early applications.
