Job Details

The Refugee Council is one of the leading charities in the UK working for and with refugees. We provide personalised, transformative services to people at all stages of the asylum determination process, enabling them to live with dignity, understanding and hope, and ensuring they are equipped and supported to influence the decisions and debates that affect their lives. We also advocate for the fair treatment of refugees in the UK, generating a strong evidence base from our service delivery experience, and working cooperatively with a wide range of partners and peer organisations to strengthen the impact of everything we say and do.

Following a period of rapid growth, the organisation is well set for a productive and influential future. The finance team has a crucial role in ensuring all our activities are supported by robust financial planning, that financial transactions are processed efficiently and in an environment of sound financial control and in line with regulation, and that the services and fundraising teams are supported in the pursuit and application of external funding and donations.

The finance team is a friendly, diverse and well-respected team providing valued support to the organisation. We are looking for a Head of Finance who can maintain the existing quality levels, seek continuous improvements in all our systems and processes, and, working with the Executive Director Finance and Resources, support the finance team and the organisation through the next steps in our strategic planning.

The main purpose of the Head of Finance role is to formulate and implement our financial and accounting practices during a period of rapid change and growth, and to ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements. The post will manage a team of eight staff, four of whom are direct reports who are responsible for the day-to-day financial processing and providing support to individual budget holders. The team also oversees the outsourced payroll provider, ADP, and ensures that all staffing changes are implemented correctly. The postholder will directly support the EDF&R, senior management team and trustees through the provision of high-quality financial information to help guide financial decision making and control.

Refugee Council policy is where possible to appoint a candidate with starting pay at the lowest point of the advertised scale. However, where candidates are able to demonstrate experience levels commensurate with a higher point on the scale, it may be possible to agree a starting salary at a higher scale point. Further, in exceptional circumstances where we are unable to appoint at the advertised salary level, market supplements may be used to attract outstanding candidates. If you believe yourself to be such an outstanding candidate please do apply for this position, and we will be able to discuss the possibility of these arrangements should you progress to interview stage.
