Learning and Work Institute is an independent policy, research and development organisation dedicated to promoting lifelong learning, full employment and inclusion.  We are focused on the big questions, such as how can we help people navigate a changing world of work and how do we fund and deliver successful learning, skills and employment services when money is tight.  Our vision is for a prosperous and fair society in which learning and work provide opportunities for everyone to realise their potential and ambitions throughout life.

The Director of Policy and Research plays a central and fundamental role within the Institute, with responsibility for a significant number of the organisation’s staff and output.  Leading a team of circa thirty experts you will have responsibility for generating over £4 million of programme income and will have a significant impact on policy and practice.

We are looking for a highly capable and ambitious leader who brings a commercial mindset that can see opportunities for developing further our research income. Though being a qualified researcher is not a requirement of the role, an understanding, empathy and appreciation of the research and policy agenda is important.  As part of the senior management team, you will play an important strategic leadership role in further developing and building on the organisation’s success.

L&W is a Silver Investors in People Award holder, so our people matter.  You will be a confident leader and people manager, who can empower and inspire teams to deliver and innovate. You will also be credible at senior and national level, engaging and influencing an extensive range of stakeholders, including politicians and policymakers, to make sure we maximise our impact and make a difference.

As a key member of the Senior Management Team, you will be joining the Institute at a positive time when the issues of learning, skills and employment have never been more relevant. As part of the SMT you will be responsible for developing and implementing organisational strategies and plans within a challenging financial and complex political landscape.
