About the Royal College of Anaesthetists

Anaesthesia is the largest single hospital specialty in the NHS. The Royal College of Anaesthetists is the professional body responsible for the specialty throughout the UK, and it ensures the quality of patient care through the maintenance of standards.

With a combined membership of 22,000 fellows and members, representing the three specialties of anaesthesia, intensive care and pain medicine, we are the third largest Medical Royal College by UK membership.

What we are looking for

Our Lay Committee was established in 1998 with the purpose of providing a non-clinical view on the College’s activities to improve patient care and experience.

We are looking to recruit members of the Lay Committee to join us in advising and supporting our Council in its strategic objectives. You will be invited to actively contribute your lay perspective to a range of work streams including our clinical guidelines and onsite clinical reviews of anaesthesia services. You will need to be able to travel and commit to giving at least 12 days a year, which include four meetings per year (in London) plus a strategy away day.

We would like to hear from you if you can demonstrate a genuine interest in the NHS, healthcare and the specialty of anaesthesia.  You will be a confident communicator, skilled at debating your points with the flexibility to reach shared agreements.

As a lay member, we cannot consider you if you currently hold an anaesthetic medical qualification or are currently working, practising or are involved in policy or decision making within the healthcare sector.  DBS checks will be required for the successful candidate(s).

To apply, please submit a short covering letter (no more than two pages) explaining why appointment to the Lay Committee is of interest to you and what you specifically would bring to the role, together with your CV (no more than three pages) and the names and contact details of two referees.

Closing date:  30 September 2018

Interviews will take place in October 2018
