Job Details

The Church of England Pensions Board provides retirement services for those who have served or worked for the Church. It is the Trustee of four pension schemes and administers pensions for over 40,000 people working for more than 520 employers. In addition, it is a charity which houses around 2500 retired clergy and their dependants, mainly through the provision of affordable rental housing, shared ownership, and supported living schemes. Pensions and charitable funds under investment total in excess of £2.6bn and the Pensions Board actively engages with companies it invests in, in line with its robust, industry-leading ethical investment policies. The work of the Pensions Board is complex and subject to legal regulation (including by the Pensions Regulator and the Charity Commission).

The Pensions Board is now seeking to appoint a new Chair to succeed Jonathan Spencer, who has reached the end of his term. This is a significant and high-profile role and the Chair will engage closely with the leaders of the Other National Church Institutions (NCIs), will lead a diverse group of 19 trustees and work with the recently appointed CEO and his Executive Team, to ensure that the best interests of its customers are met and secure. With a demonstrable record of senior leadership in substantial roles in the financial, public or third sector and proven chairing and board level experience, you will have the ability to help shape strategy and ensure robust governance arrangements.  A track record of leading and embedding sustainable change, including cultural change, is a pre-requisite, together with the ability to lead the Pensions Board through complex and significant financial decision making. You will have the intellectual rigour, relationship skills and political sensitivity to be credible and influential across all our key stakeholders and will bring outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.

This is no ordinary Chair appointment. We are looking for somebody who will share our values of Excellence, Respect and Integrity, who will be a trusted and inspirational presence and who will bring an empathy to and understanding of our purpose and vision. The Chair is an ex-officio member of the General Synod of the Church of England and, as such, this position carries an Occupational Requirement that the appointee be a communicant member of the Church of England. Part 1 of Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010 applies to this appointment.

The role requires a time commitment of c.50 days a year for a term of up to 6 years.
